Q: is this an orbital sander; or is it straight line (back and forth)?

this is an orbital sander, feel free to check makita website, most "straight line sanders" currently only seem to be available in phnuematic and are usually whats also referred to as long board sanders around 16 inches long. this model is a 1/3rd sheetsander 3 5/8" x 9 1/8 (hook and loop) or 3 5/8" x 11" using clamps. if your looking for 1/2 sheet sander try 1/2 Sheet Finishing SanderModel BO4900V

Q: What is the amperage?

Says 1.7 amps on the sander data plate. Seems like the motor has a lot of power for that low of an amperage rating.

Q: I own a previous model of this (excellent) but it now makes a hard click when it starts. Is it time to replace?

Try to blow out the switch. Then if that does not work, take it apart to see if there is any dust clogging the movement. Look at the brushes to see if they are good, replace if necessary. Look at the contacts, make sure they are clean.
