The joys of 4 by 4
If you can get through the British expressions of bonnets , tyres, petrol and metric measures you will find this to be an informative book . It is obvious the author has lots of off road experience and valuable information on how to cope with problems that only arise where toe trucks and garages are out of reach . He does tend to talk about Land Rivers and Land Cruisers mostly but a lot it is applicable to our Jeeps too . If you are interested or anticipating off reading this is a good book for you . One thing he fails to mention is you should not go off alone . I did it for years and was lucky but being a mechanic I know there are countless things that can strand you out there where cell phones or smoke signals won't help .

As important as my map!
Read almost the entire book. 400+ pages of descriptions and pictures. Best part it is on my iPad. So when I go into the bush, I have more space for my gear, easy to read at night, and easily portable. The photos in this are a big help as well, and the info provided helped me make some good purchases for gear I did not have. If your going to overland or off-road, all enthusiasts should purchase this manual.

I bought this book to update myself on driving skills off road, off road hazards and situations to beware of, and other techniques for using an off road - four wheel drive vehicle. This book is for the newbie who doesn't know anything about four wheel drive vehicles or basic driving skills in four wheel drive. The experienced person like myself will probably not get much out of this book. The first half of the book is about choosing the four wheel drive vehicle. I already have a 4-WD and found the first half of the book useless. The second half is almost useless due to advice that I find not to be very good. The author repeatedly states that the high lift jack is the most valuable piece of equipment to have off road, yet in the same paragraph says that most vehicles will not be able to use one due to plastic bumpers and recessed jacking points. I threw away my high lift jack 30 years ago and have not missed it. If one wants to jack up a vehicle, bottle jacks are the way to go; these are stable while a high lift is not.I found the advice on how to deal with large African animals entertaining but useless. We don't have rhinoceroses and Cape Buffalos here in the U.S.A.The discussion on where to mount a spare tire was quaint. It seems that the Land Rover, which is the vehicle the author drives, has the ability to mount the spare on the roof, the bonnet ( hood ) or on the back. Most U.S. and Japanese vehicles do not have those options. My spare tire weights 102 pounds so it would be impossible for me to lift it onto the roof, and there would be no way to see the road if it were on the hood.Much of the advice in the book is common sense such as check your oil and take drinking water. Some of the advice is bizarre such as hooking up two batteries in series in order to create a bush arc welder. If a vehicle is so damaged that it needs welding, either the driver was not paying attention, they made a bad judgement about the type of vehicle they should have been using, or the terrain was too rough to be using a vehicle.I rate the book 1 star for content and 5 stars for the author's enthusiasm and the entertaining stories about thieving baboons and other peculiar African wild life encounters.

Great book!
Lots of practical advice from someone who clearly knows what they’re talking about. White is opinionated, but his opinions are well-informed.
