Galactic Dynamics: Second Edition (Princeton Series in Astrophysics)

The bible of galactic dynamics. I like having it handy on all my devices rather than having to lug around the heavy book. While the content of the book is beyond reproach I dock one star for ebook production issues. The equations and figures were scanned at low resolution so they do not look good on high-resolution (retina) displays. The figures need to be scanned at higher resolution. The equations should be done with high-resolution scans or by generating them directly from the TeX source and using high-resolution fonts.

Absolutely first rate, but quite advanced. The topics are covered in minute detail, with clear expository explanations of all the phenomena involved in galactic dynamics. Chapter 2 on Potential Theory and Chapter 4 on Orbits of Stars were worth the purchase price. Definitely recommended for the advanced student or researcher. It's truly amazing how much material the authors have packed into this volume. You'd better know your physics and math cold!

A marvelous exposition but also requires some preparation in advance but still can be really wonderful to read regardless!

This is a very thick book and covers a ton of material. I also like that some of the images of galaxies are in color. It starts off by going over some basic concepts, so even if you aren't very knowledgable on the subject, you could probably get through atleast most of this book.

This is a good investment. I will recommend this book for anyone equipped with a bit of physics knowledge to get it. You will love it. promise

Book of good quality and arrived within estimated time

Book was in great condition. Of course this the classic galactic dynamics book, so I would highly recommend it to anyone in the field.

This is a new edition of 'Galactic Dynamics'. Lots of sections were updated.The book is excellent. I use it for graduate class, which I teach, andI use it for reference.

Honestly bloody brilliant. I bought it for my graduate course in galactic evolution and have since been using it for my MSc work. It'll definitely serve me into my PhD if I follow on.

It includes almost all the useful models and theories. But it is too hard for either undergraduate or master students to read.

This book needs no recommendation from me. Anyone studying this subject will be told it is the standard book to get, brought up to date in 2008. It deals with the technigues for calculating gravitational fields for suitable density distributions, for the purpose of modelling galaxies, assessing mass distribution, baryonic and DM, obtaining orbits by numerical integration methods for discs and bars. The book covers its subject comprehensively and with fine style. It is well illustrated and also carries appendices of numerous standard mathematical methods. Quite apart from those who would need this book if they are following an astrophysics course, I would say to anyone who has ever loved Newton's mechanics and gravity, read this for an adventure that goes beyond the Keplerian field of a solar system.
