Q: Do these blocks come with items inside of them to observe, or do you have to provide the items?

Your put your own items in them. Bought these for my granddaughter. She loves putting her treasures in them.

No, treasures are not already inside. You would collect and put your own treasures in the boxes.

Q: Can these be used without screws for ease of swapping items?

The screws on them were quite easy to open and close but I would say the screws must be used to keep the boxes closed.
