Q: does it matter side or back wall?

Directions say back wall. My heater did not heat box.

This worked perfectly for me. I built a large bi-level structure to house my outdoor ferals. I often have five or six cats inside at the same time. The house is approximately 3' x 3' x 2.5' high, and it has 2-inch rigid insulation all around, top and bottom. One unit keeps the house at a steady 72 to 76 degrees (depending on outside temp). I have an independent remote thermometer inside monitoring the temps. I've had it running a year now, with temps in the winter down to 20 degrees, with no issues (I'm in Atlanta, so it's not sub-freezing often).

Q: Why is the thermostat control knob now pictured on the top, instead of on the side where it was just a couple of weeks ago ?

Because they literally just came out with a new complete re-design this week. They came in Tuesday. The new model has the control knob on top for convenience since the heat deflector shield is now built inside so you no longer have to mount one on top to reflect the heat. This new design also is 300 Watts instead of 150 and the element is replaceable. It also heats up to 75 cubic feet instead of 32 cubic feet. I am from Rainbow Stuff and I saw that the person who put on the listing has many errors in it. I am working with Amazon to be able to correct them. Be assured I am an Authorized Dealer for Akoma Hound Heater so if you buy from Rainbow Stuff (click on see other offers under the main listing) your one year warranty will be good as long as you are buying from someone authorized. I am very well versed in this heater as we use them here for the rescue dogs we help and part of any proceeds we get goes to supporting them. I have been selling them for 3 years now and it is the best dog house heater on the market. Do remember or make note that if you are mounting it in an igloo dog house you will need the igloo bracket which I have as well. Let me know if I can help you with anything else.
