Unreliable, broke after 2 months of infrequent use
I purchased this timer on the basis of the reputation of the manufacturer. As other reviews have noted, they don't make them like they used to. After two months of twice a week use, this timer, once set, ceased to start the ticking countdown. One trusts that the product will work, so when I set the timer it didn't occur to me to pause and check whether the ticking started or not. I naturally assumed it would be functional. Fast forward a short while later and - oops - it turns out the timer never started. Who knows how much time had passed since I started cooking my food? Meal ruined. The other issue was that, even if it did start ticking, it got in the habit of stopping partway through the countdown. And in an unpredictable manner. Sometimes it would stop, sometimes it wouldn't. So much for reliability. If I want to use this timer (which I don't at this point) I have to set it, listen for the ticking, and then hope I'm able to keep listening so that I catch if it stops mid-countdown. Not very useful.I am looking into getting a vintage Lux timer, as I hear they are effective and long lasting. I am also looking into this as a 21st Century alternative. West Bend Digital Timer, White It seems simple to use. You don't need to hit a button 45 times to set the timer to 45 minutes. Other pros you can check out on the product page. I haven't purchased it, so that's about as much as I can vouch for it, but perhaps it will help you on your timer shopping journey.

Timer is repairable!
Just ordered my second Lux Classic Timer for a second kitchen/bar location. The first Lux timer has a date code of 03/12/14B which suggests it was made in March 2014. Just recently, the bell quit ringing when the timer counted down to 0. I was happy -- 3+ years of service.I wondered if the faulty timer could be repaired. There is one screw in the housing that appeared to hold in the mechanism. I removed it, and the knob and innards fell out in my hand. Good so far.Looking closely, I found two phillips head screws on the back of the metal shell that serves as housing and bell. I removed them carefully and exposed the clockwork mechanism and ringer hammer.Next I sprayed the mechanism lightly with 3-IN-ONE 120070 Lock Dry Lube (search at Amazon; you'll find it).I reassembled the mechanism, replaced it in the housing, cycled the timer a few times, and bumped it gently on the countertop to distribute the lubricant. It rings reliably and has remained good as new.Inexpensive, made in China, but sturdy and not riveted together. I'd say it's a bargain.

wanted a replacement for an old model that finally died
Liked my old timer so much wanted to replace it with same model. This fit the bill. The only issue is the first one I received didn't work so had to return it, but easy enough to do. Second one works great.

Buy this thing.
It's overpriced. But sturdy. I'm telling you, this thing is saving family relationships here. I can't tell you how many times I tell my oldest son, Jorgen, JUST put the clothes in the dryer after the washer spins. The washer takes 12 minutes to spin, and he "forgets," and I get mouldy clothes in the morning. No more yelling, no more nagging, no more "reminding." With this timer, my 20-year-old can remember to put the clothes in the dryer because he'll set it for 15 minutes and BING! Problem solved. I keep another timer upstairs in the bathroom. Sounds wierd, but I have an autistic child who uses it as part of his bath routine. After we've washed hair and all that stuff, THEN he can play with his bath toys. I set the timer for three or five minutes and then there is no more nagging, no more "just one more minute" or anything like that. Timer going off means you're done and it's time to get dressed and have dinner. You wouldn't believe it would work but within a week, the new routine is down and working.

Lux is not what it used to be
I bought 2 of these, one white and one black, to replace the lux timer that I had for more years than I want to admit to. I am sorry to say that the new lux timers are made from a cheaper quality plastic. It looks as if one fall to the kitchen floor would be end of it. Secondly, it didn't work. You are supposed to dial the timer past 30 minutes, then to the desired time. No ticks, no nothing. I tried dialing back to 60 as with the old timer, but that did not work either. The black timer was even worse. The dialer was loose and broken from the get-go. I returned both. Big disappointment. I prefer a mechanical timer so that I don't have to worry about replacing a battery at a crucial time. I then ordered the Fox Run Retro Kitchen Timer with magnet. Now there is a solid good looking timer that works. It is metal, attaches to refrig (or anything else metal), is off the counter, takes little room, looks good, and it works!

I have changed my review from 1 star to 5 star for this Lux timer
I originally gave this Lux timer a 1 star review and was returning it, now I am not. After trying different things to make it ring, I finally wound the dial all the way around then went back to the minutes I wanted, it then worked perfectly and rang loudly, it definitely gets a 5 star view now. Those that are having trouble with it working and not satisfied, do try this fix, it really works.
