Not as Biblically based as I would have liked
Before getting to why I gave this three stars, a couple points. For starters, I have not read the book "Wild at Heart" so I don't know if any of my concerns were addressed by the book. Secondly, I am a college student and watched this series with a group of college-aged Christian men. This series is definitely addressed towards men more towards mid-30's and up, although it was interesting to see their point of view on aspects of life we haven't had to consider yet (such as marriage, children, careers, etc). The series is basically John Eldridge and some of his friends doing a number of different adventures and then relating those adventures to life, and in particular "getting your heart back" from society and from the world. Some of these adventures were a little hokey and dorky, but kind've fun. As younger guys a lot of the moments were hard to relate to but it was reasonably interesting. The biggest reason I'm only giving it three stars is that points made in the series generally didn't have significant Biblical backing. There was a little bit at times, and most of the points they made were good ones anyways, however if you're looking for a program based very heavily on scripture this probably isn't it. As I said earlier, I haven't read the book so I don't know if there is more discussion from scripture or not there. That was our biggest disappointment with the series and the primary reason I'm only giving it three stars.

Good Christian small group material.
One of the continuing questions in our culture is what does it mean to be male in the 21st Century. Eldridge introduces the concepts of freedom, passion, adventure, romance, and fighting for your heart that have been missing "normal" approaches to the Christian male. The video series works well with the book. It looks like they may be updating the dvd. The book was written in 02 and updated in 09. The combination of the book, video, and guide really made me think and suggests actions.

Great study
This study goes along with the wild at heart book and is a great way to have a men's bible study that is different than the same old church rhetoric that plagues so many small groups. The testimonies given on the videos open the door for lots of discussion among the men in the group and bring to light some things that men might otherwise never talk about. Preview the videos ahead of time if your group is very conservative because some of the stories about their fathers contains some colorful stories and a word or two that their father used.

Good for initiating conversation
Our small Men's Group uses this video series to initiate conversation about the book Wild at Heart which we are reading in parallel. I find that our discussion is much longer than it was when we didn't have the video. In fact, that is my only negative point, we don't have enough time to go through every question or point to ponder (and this is with only 4 men).

I hoped for better
This series needs an update, badly. Also, each week has you finding and playing a different DVD, from an era when people maintained large libraries of DVDs.Huge fan of Eldridge, but it was very difficult getting men in their 20s and 30s today to relate to these.

Man up
Easy to follow and relate to. Not a real Bible study, but more of a guide to Biblical small groups. Very watchable and offering a much overlooked insight to male fulfillment. Strongly recommend. I will be leading a men's Bible study using this tool. We'll see how it goes in a larger setting.

Essential Viewing
John Eldredge has an amazing grasp on the wounds that we carry as men. In this video series he confronts the issues head on and sets out the path to recovery of the masculine heart.
