anyone try using the "amish roll butter"- its a big fat roll of butter. If so does the whole roll fit in the bell?

I use that butter and no it won't fit. I keep the Amish "log of butter" in the fridge and I cut a chunk off and put it in the butter bell. I think you can refill the bell at least a half dozen times from that. You wouldn't want to keep the whole thing out anyway unless your house goes though a LOT of butter. I keep several different kinds of butter in the fridge (salted, unsalted, cultured...) and keep small portions out in a bell for toast and whatnot. The stuff in the fridge i use for cooking/baking or longer storage. One thing to note: I find that homemade butter and unsalted specialty butter do not last as long in the butter bell as a typical salted butter in warm climates. Lastly, when filling it, cut off a chunk, put it in the bell like a cup and let it warm up. Then push the butter down, smooth it out, add water and flip it over. It's much easier than trying to mash in cold butter.
