Not sure. I blend and simmer mine on the stove for my hair.

Health benefits of any spice can be researched on line. I bought these to steep with tea to give it a little different flavor.

Q: Could they just be put in a bowl for fragrance ?

Of course they can, and I'm sure you can already smell the aroma thru the bag. Should a child so happen to chew on some all that will happen is, at first there might be a little heat sensation, then some numbing, and then they'll probably just spit it out, it might also be a big shock to the chld, so they may cry, but other than that, there shouldn't be any harmful effects, as long as they are not allergic to clove. Hope that helps.
