Brilliant for the price

This is a unique series of Victorian Mysteries with outstanding performances by many of Britain's greatest actors when they were young. The production values are very high, too, with richly decorated Victorian settings. The BBC has always set the benchmark for period drama in the UK but Thames gave them a run for their money here and were rewarded with a Best Design BAFTA in 1972. This collection is a jewel of excellent television that you cannot find today. We are blessed it is now available on DVD. It is fun to spot big stars in their earliest roles. try and find a very young Jeremy Irons, John Thaw and many many more.

Missed these delights when they were new, but these great little tales work very well. They aren't ground-breaking, they won't change the world, but they are nice corking yarns with some fabulous British actors who knew how to wear period costume and how to sound good. There are some excellent designs too, considering most of it is studio based (which means you can hear what the actors are saying, unlike most location stuff) and there are 26 episodes to choose from. Many a winter's evening will be cheered by these. Glad they are available for all to enjoy.

Excellent viewing - particularly the Martin Hewitt cases - two programmes featuring Peter Barkworth - they should have given him a series! Superb actor and worth the 7 dvds just to see him.

Nostalgic trip back to when quality telly like this was the norm; great stories and fine actors. The highlights are Douglas Wilmer's Thinking Machine and a lovely scene in John Thaw's episode when an embassy official says to him, "I don't think you will ever be an Inspector, Lieutenant." We all know how that turned out!

We bought these before Christmas, and have rationed our watching since then. Last night we saw the last one. Sad. They were excellently produced, if a little dated, with many excellent actors looking very young. Well worth getting!

Classic Masterpiece Theater type BBC material from the late 70s. Similar to theatrical stage productions, with the best of Brit acting. Splendid entertainment if you like costume drama from this period.

This is a well written and well acted series. For those familiar with the 70's and 80's failiar actors will apear in here. Some have ven played in Columbo (the bald , wine episode)Sound is excelent, englis, but no subtitles available.For this price i highly recomend it. Its better than manny actual series.
