Great items
We open coconuts all the time with a dull machete and its been spooky. I got this in hopes of more efficiency and safety. You do have to get pretty close to the shell, otherwise the husk prevents you from popping it open. But I like that when you are close enough and able to tap the shell open, we have a lot less water spillage then when hacking it with a machete. The edge has stayed sharp so far through numerous coconuts, there has been no issues with the white mallet at all, it is well made with no strong smell, and you do have to be able to put a litle muscle into tapping through a layer of husk and shell. I swear I was supposed to also receive a small anti-slip mat but didn't receive it. We like this item.

This works and it's awesome!
So far I've opened about 30 young Thai coconuts with this and it works perfectly! There is a small learning curve and even though the instructions are short, they are accurate and helpful if you follow it. From what I've experienced, the coconut should be shaved down to the shell so you're not cutting through the husk. If you hit one side and cut into the shell, then hit a little bit down on the other side - it's enough to open the coconut by pressing the handle down (see the instructions, it'll make sense.) You can easily open it in 3-4 well-placed hits. The blade hasn't dulled that much and it's probably easily sharpened with the right type of sharpener. There are a lot of similar coconut openers. I got this one because it was one of the most affordable and I wasn't planning on using it long-term. Glad I did! It did not come with a mat, but I already have some of the flat ones so I didn't mind.

Easy to use and clean
I ordered this coconut opener tools to be able to buy fresh young coconuts in cases and have them anytime instead of needing to buy single ones at places where they would open them for us, I would suggest to use underneath a silicone trivet or something else that would prevent them from sliding and to hit hard few times, these opener tools do their job and the end result it's savoring a delicious fresh coconut juice which it can't be compared with any of the bottled ones, in addition the opening it's enough wide to scrape off the white flesh which it's also delicious to eat, both the opener tool and the hammer are easily washable.

My cleaver works better
I started buying fresh coconut from the local market so my kids can have coconut water, and I can make smoothies with the coconut meat. I tried many different ways to open a young coconut, watching tons of YouTube videos, and a few introduced a device similar to this one. So I bought on. I used in a dozen of times, and gave up, went back to using my cleaver. Pros: 1. Looks well built, nothing broke so far 2. Gets the job done, albeit quite messy - the pulp and coconut water flies everywhere Cons: 1. Not designed with different coconut size in mind. There is a natural edge around the coconut's cap, and using a cleaver, you can punch around until you find the cap. This does it by brute-force, thus resulting in loud bangs and pulp / coconut water splatters everywhere 2. The angle indicated by instruction seems to be wrong, the angle used inside the Youtube videos seems to better though still is quite messy I was debating whether to return it, but since it works, and I found a few uses for the rubber mallet so I'm keeping the set for now. I recommend you use the cleaver method (plenty of Youtube videos on this), now that I have opened 100s of young coconuts, I can do this quite easily. My one tip is to cut away the pulp on the top, so you can easily locate the edge of the cap.

Impressed
Used it the same day I got it. Cut through my young coconuts really well. Good call to nuy it. Makes it easier to break the coconuts surface.
