Yes you can. It's always a good idea to freeze bird seed anyway, to ensure nothing living has gotten into it.

Q: how long is it good for

When I used to have birds and used this, the bags had a zip top. It was always very fresh too. Don't know exactly how long it's good for.

i too have used safflower gold for many many years- even before there were online stores, used to buy direct from higgins. my birds have always been healthy and happy. great product and no sunflower seeds

I order Higgins often and the parrots and I have been happy with the safflower gold. The last bag I received was the same as usual with nuts and pellets added. I would take some pictures of the contents and contact them.
