I needed a cheap guitar for travelling in my motorhome this winter but I have a good ear and can't stand the sound of cheap guitars. So I watched several reviews of this guitar before pulling the trigger on buying it and figured Amazon's return policy makes it a safe purchase. I'm an advanced player and I've now gotten into modifying guitars so I bought this one for $200 CDN, with a coupon, and I figured I'd probably change one or two of the pickups (pups) and likely the nut and still have saved some money. The reviews were all pretty positive, and now I why. The fit and finish is very good, however I thought the violet colour was more covering than what I got. There's a lot of white and just some violet which was a bit disappointing. The neck is nice, the frets are good, but not jumbo frets, they are thin. It played well right out of the box, just had to tune it. The intonation was fine, the action height was pretty good but I took some neck relief out of it to lower the action a bit more, half a turn of the truss rod. But I had to put a quarter turn relief back in because the first two frets on the B string were dead. But a quarter turn of tuss rod back in and it went away. So in the end its lowered it a bit, but too bad the lower action didn't work because it was very nice everywhere but those two B string frets. I could file those frets lower but some other day I suppose and maybe a better nut might help there too. The neck feels good, comfortable, not as skinny as an Ibanez but it's no baseball bat either. 24 frets too. The fretboard could use a bit of polishing but not crazy bad. I had a new Epiphone SG Muse that was very rough, but it only took a few weeks of playing and that smoothed out so this one won't take long since it's way smoother than that SG was. The pups were a pleasant surprise, they're not too hot and had decent clarity and definition. They are fairly versatile. I started testing it on a Metallica signal chain, sounded good, then Van Halen and it did well, then AC DC and I was surprised it was still doing well. Then I did Led Zeppelin not as successful but some tweeking could resolve it, then clean tones and again it did well. So it can do metal, classic rock and clean tones all quite well. The pups could use a bit more brightness, a tiny bit muddy but again much nicer sounding pups than that Epiphone SG and it was 2.5 times the price. You can't go wrong with this guitar for the money. It's marketed as a beginner guitar, it's not, it's much better than that but at beginner prices. The extra stuff, strap, gig bag, extra strings, etc are beginner cheap crap but the guitar is good. It's light weight and comfortable. I may eventually change out the bridge pup but not yet. I'll enjoy these for a while. It will be a good guitar for my travelling but it is also one I'd recommend to just about anyone. Except for the rich and famous.
