This is a nice hoist that is simple enough to fit and seems nice and sturdy but my problem is that you need to be directly under the lock for it to reliably lock when releasing the cord, this is not ideal when used with a large kayak as I have but have still made it work. I am using this for an 11 foot fishing kayak that weighs 38kg/84lb apparently and it holds it fine, I have added some extra straps to hooks on the ceiling as I do not fully trust the lock. It seems to release quite easily when the cord on the cleat is bumped sometimes so want the additional peace of mind. If you are able to pull the cord directly under the lock on this then it is great.

Easy to install. Simple to operate. The metal brackets and pulleys seem to be high quality. However, after reading other reviews, I was concerned about the quality/durability of the rope that comes with the kit. I didn’t test theirs because I didn’t want to take a chance with a $1000 kayak. I got 100 feet of 5.5 mm paracord from REI for just $25. It works great and it’s nice having the piece of mind that it won’t fail. Well worth the cost of the upgrade.
