UK eight disc (seven CDs + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) set. The Studio Albums 1979 - 1987 is a clamshell box set that gathers together all seven studio albums released by the legendary classical rock band Sky over a nine year period. Formed in 1979, Sky brought together the worlds of rock and classical music in a highly successful and inspiring way. Featuring the gifted talents of guitarist John Williams, percussionist Tristan Fry, legendary bass player Herbie Flowers, former Curved Air keyboard player Francis Monkman and guitarist Kevin Peek, Sky recorded their debut album at Abbey Road studios in the early months of 1979. The band's self-titled debut reached the UK top ten in May 1979 and went on to achieve platinum status in the UK and was also a major hit in Europe and Australia. Also, a huge live attraction, Sky released their second album in April 1980. Sky 2 was a fine achievement, featuring the hit single 'Toccata', and topped the UK album charts upon it's release. For the band's third album, Steve Gray replaced Francis Monkman on keyboards, but the band continued their run of success as Sky 3 reached the UK Top Ten upon it's release in March 1981. The albums Sky 4 and Cadmium continued the run of best-selling albums, following which John Williams departed the band in December 1983. In March 1985, the album The Great Balloon Race was recorded in Australia and the UK, becoming another hit album. In 1987, they recorded their final album, which saw Sky arrange pieces composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart featured the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner and earned the group their highest ever US chart placing upon release. DVD contains Sky - Live In Nottingham 1990, a performance recorded for Central Television on the 24th June 1990.

All Sky's studio albums at a great price
I remember, as a teen and in my early twenties, listening to Sky on record quite a bit. If memory serves, I bought their first few albums and enjoyed them, but then turned to other genres. Still, I had good memories of Sky, so when this box appeared in a search, I bought it hoping to relieve those younger days. Sometimes, the memory should be left alone...This is a box of eight discs (7 CDs and 1 DVD), representing all the albums Sky put out from 1979 (eponymous album), through the years to 1987 when the group ceased releasing anything. Along the way there was Sky 2, Sky 3, Sky 4, Cadmium, then two other albums I don't remember seeing before: The Great Balloon Race, and a disc of Mozart pieces done Sky-style. There's shades of classical music on all their albums, done in a "modern" take (think ELP!), and I believe that's what attracted me to Sky in the first place. Alas, relistening to the albums I realize as a youth my mixed tastes between rock and classical led me a bit astray: none of these pieces really stood out to my (now much older) ears, although a few (such as those on Sky 2) sounded familiar. The DVD is a live concert dating from 1990, when the band got back together for the live event. These discs are not remastered, so they reflect the source quite well. I found an old LP of Sky 3, and compared it to the CD in this box, and apart from background noise from the vinyl, they sound identical. This would have been a good opportunity to remaster the music, but I guess the group didn't justify the effort in the publisher's mind. I've been through the box now, once, and several tracks twanged memory (which was pleasant) but I doubt these CDs will see daylight again, instead moving to the CD storage racks for quite a while. Still, this is a reasonably price for the set of CDs and DVD, and I'm glad I bought the box just in case I ever feel the need to listen through again. And the rekindled memories of my record-listening youth were worth the investment!
