Great SSD Enclosure
Hardware involved: SATECHI SSD Enclosure WD_BLACK SN850X SSD (WD_BLACK) Macbook Pro M2 (Mac) Dell Precision 7770 (Dell) Both laptops have Thunderbolt 4 ports capable of 40 Gbps (Gigabit not Byte) 1. Mac - WD_BLACK - APFS Formatted: Over 3000 MBps read/write (MegaBYTE not bit). The best speeds I have seen. This is almost as fast write, but faster read than my Macintosh HD. 2. Dell - WD_BLACK - NTFS Formatted: ~2200 MBps write and ~2600MBps read. The slowest out of all pictures but still quick. Not as fast as the Mac. Unfortunately is a little slower compared to the Dell's built in SSD (WD Green SN350). Additionally I decided to compare the exFAT formatted WD_BLACK between the Mac and Dell: 3. Mac - WD_BLACK - exFAT formatted: ~2700 MBps write and ~3000 MBps read. Slightly slower write speed than the APFS Formatted version. 4. Dell - WD_BLACK - exFAT formatted: ~2400 MBps write and ~2600 MBps read. Faster than its NTFS Formatted version, but still slightly slower to the Dell's built in SSD. Transferred over 600 GB of .iso files from my Dell to this Enclosure with the WD_BLACK and got an average of 1.3 GB per second. Copied everything over in under 8 minutes. Overall this enclosure proved that it works well with professional-grade machines like the Macbook Pro and Dell Precision series, with a preference over Mac, but still does well with a Windows machine (as long as it has Thunderbolt 4). Highly recommend using this enclosure to build a portable SSD over ANY portable SSD you may find at best buy. It might be more expensive but the $$$ is worth it! Also this thing looks like it came out of a James Bond movie! Super cool! Q would be blown away at this!

The smart choice for a FAST external SSD on anything short of the M4 gen Macs
I bought this external enclosure to use with a 8TB WD SN850X internal NVMe SSD on a M3 Max MacBook Pro. This gives me read and write speeds of >3,000 MB/s, which is many times faster than the ready made 8TB External drives on the market, for not a lot more cost wise. Sadly, this enclosure is not Thunderbolt 5 capable, but then nor is my M3 Max MacBook Pro. There are better options available if you plan on using this enclosure with the very latest computers. That aside, installation is easy and tool free. It looks great, feels good in-hand, is reasonably compact and is blazingly fast! One minor quibble is that there is a little rubber bung like thing which secures your drive in place, inside the enclosure. A screw would have been better, even if it meant you lost the tool free convenience. The enclosure also gets hot to the touch with the SN850X inside and running, but this is to be expected without active cooling. Overall, I’m happy with it. Would recommend!

Only Review You Need to Read
I am a premium best-of-tech guy. Macbook Pro, 2 custom-built 100TB servers, CAT8 network cable hooked up to 10GBe switches, multi wifi 6e routers and APs, VPN's, added encryption, caldigit docks, LG 55" OLED monitors w multiple widescreens and logi inputs, etc etc. NOT boasting, truly. What you should infer is that, if I do something, I do it right, take care of it, and you might; get the quality you pay for today, usually not. So be Selective. I love Satechi, their innovators, and beautiful minimalist designers. I own many of their products. After buying a third 4TB Samsung 990 NVME for external storage, I needed an enclosure. I've had two acasis enclosure and decided to give Satechi a shot. Newer, similar speed reports, and larger capability for size scaling in the future. Don't, Sorry Satechi. It's pretty quick and runs hot enough to burn you at the touch, the see-through extra bulk plastic thermal case. Is anyone using that, seriously? The case is well-built but still larger than the Acasis. The Acasis IS faster, always. It effortlessly rips like it's your Mac's internal storage. Acasis is less expensive, smaller (I stick mine on the back of my screen and barely notice it), and runs cool! Heat is Bad, continuous heat is worse for the drive. The plastic case only protects your skin; that drive is still under tremendous heat. Satechi, It's ok. I'd be willing to try your next generation, but you're not there yet. I expected more, especially for the added $40. Buy an acasis + quality thermal pad + short TB3/4 cable. Be done. Hope this is helpful

3100mbps speeds, runs warm
Great enclosure with no issues with random disconnects or problems awaking from sleep. I run my m4 Mac mini home folder off of it and it loads apps quickly with no issues. Runs pretty warm even in sleep so I typically shut down my Mac. The enclosure is all metal and the fins probably dissipate heat well, which is why it’s warm to the touch. You get what you pay for and if you want fast speeds without issues, get this one.

Very fast enclosure with WD drive
I mated this enclosure with a WD SN850X 1TB drive using my Mac Mini M4 pro that has TB5 ports. It gives me W/R speeds of 3540/3380 using Black Magic app. Some have stated that the included cable is not TB4 but mine was even though it had no markings. The enclosure gets warm but no warmer than others I have. The plastic shield keeps it cool to the touch. One not of caution if you use this with an older TB3 Mac (like 2019 Intel iMac) the write speeds will be less than 1/2 of the TB4 Mac speeds.

I have been using this drive everyday for about a month. I am very happy with its performance, I have installed a 2TB Samsung 990 PRO drive in it and it I have it connected to a 16" MacBook Pro with the M3 PRO. You can not tell the difference when using this drive or the internal SSD. It does get a bit warm but nothing crazy. The fit and finish is also very good and you do not need any tools to open and change the drive. Read: 3000MB/s Write: 3200MB/s Highly Recommend

Quick delivery. Well made although the little rubber 'plug' that secures the SSD is a little fiddly. Getting good speeds consistent with USB4 on a TB 5 port and a WD-Black SN850x ssd. Runs quite warm (idles around 50c) but never so hot it seems to throttle. Very pleased

Das Ding ist schnell und die Installation sehr einfach. Vor allem das Handling, ohne Schraubenzieher das Ding aufzubekommen, resp. zu verschliessen ist schon cool. Und die Verarbeitung finde ich top.

Very fast, well-built and tool-less case. Speeds well above 3000 MB/s are no problem with fast enough SSDs like the WD SN850X . Even the old Samsung 980 was twice as fast after switching it to this case - up to 2400 MB/s . However, in my brief testing it did not work well with cheaper SSDs without DRAM but using Host Memory Buffer like the Lexar NM620. Tests done on Apple M1 Mac Mini. I’m using this case as an external startup disk because the Mini only has 256 GB of storage. Nitpicking: The supplied cable is a bit short. If you replace it, make sure to use a good quality TB4/USB4 cable as a bad one will impact speed negatively.
