Q: Is this what I need to breathe underwater just in like pools or a lake, or fo I need other equipment? Its just for fun

First, you need to be a certified diver to use this, along with all the other equipment necessary to dive. Second, this is used as a backup regulator incase another diver needs air or something happens to your main. Check out your local dive shop for more information on diving. Once you breathe underwater, you'll be hooked! Have fun!

Q: is this regulator balanced?

Second stages aren't balanced to my knowledge. It's the first stage that the octo is connected to is what's balanced or unbalanced.

Q: I have read that older versions of this Octo are not compatible with the Aqua lung Legend regulator. Do you know if this is true?

It will work with it at shallower depths. It can start to leak from the mouthpeice around 75ft. I have sold many of these regs together without an issue. The problem is because the Legend is over balanced and the ABS is not built to be compatible with this function at depth. An alternative is the Apecks Egress Octo. This is built to work with overbalanced regs. It is low profile like the ABS.

Q: Does this octo work upside down without water entering it?

Yes, you can use it in either direction. Up is down and down is up. Which is great for emergencies, last thing you want to be thinking is this right side up or upside down. Just put it in your mouth and breathe!! Love this octo btw.
