OK.. probably dumb question here.. but does it heat and work well with heat shrinks after a soldering job?

Yes, I just did my foot lighting in my truck and I soldered the wires together and heat shrunk it to seal it up. It has a hi/low heat button, I just used the low heat.

can you stand it on its back?

Will this get hot enough to remove red loc tight

I would think it would loosen up red loctite. It gets extremely hot.
