New Pocket Dog Training

Well written & very useful
There are a number of approaches to dog training - you need to go with the one that suits you, and your dog. Having raised 3 puppies myself, I have always found the method covered by this book to work well, and the reward-based training rather than discipline-based training is much kinder, and healthier for the dog-human relationship (and much more up to date with training research too). The book is excellent in its conveying of how to do the training - essentially the 'how to' for each command is simple and takes only a paragraph to explain. Actually doing it takes patience... lots of patience. Many training books repeat themselves over and over again to fill space - this book explains things once, and simply, and then uses good illustrations and photographs to demonstrate the method. It covers a lot of training - from basic to some more advanced commands, and has good sections on dog care and potential problems. All in all an excellent, handy reference guide - even for experienced dog owners, who may feel the need to refer to it from time to time.Note that this book is exactly the same as the larger version from the same publisher / author, just with smaller text / pictures. We thought it may be a condensed version, but it is the same (luckily we didn't buy both!). If you are ok reading small text, this version is much handier to carry / have around than the large version.

good, easy to follow advice
Having never had a dog before, I have found this book to be very useful. It is laid out in a clear, step by step way with photographs. I also have New Dog by Bruce Fogle which has been a great help before and after getting our puppy. I think that if you are completely new to dogs and dog training as I am this book on it's own is probably not enough as it concentrates purely on training rather than an overall insight into your puppy's mind and the various stages of growing up (all of which need to be taken into consideration when training). Alongside a more rounded book and possibly some puppy classes it is a very useful guide for focusing on the specifics of training certain commands. I would recommend it as Bruce Fogle's approach to dogs and dog training is sensible, kind and straightforward and it is a good clear reference for keeping training on track.

Well set out easy to read. Doesn't go into great detail but handy for reference when starting out with a new puppy.

Packed with information.
Packed with information and clear illustrations. The font size is very small but I found it manageable. The dog I walk is showing the benefit.

Has plenty of helpful tips but they are difficult to work on a Labrador
I have an 11 month old black Labrador and been using this book since December, it does have plenty of useful diagrams, pictures, tips and helpful ways to train a dog with kindness however I do have to say that on a difficult puppy it doesn't work overly well.Over all I would say it is a good book and arrived in good time but the techniques are perhaps better perhaps better for quieter breeds or older dogs. This should be used as a SUPPLEMENT to proper training and training classes too.
