MHW-3BOMBER 53mm Espresso Coffee Tamper
The MHW-3BOMBER 53mm Espresso Coffee Tamper is hands down one of the best tampers I’ve used! The quality is exceptional—it's made with durable materials, and you can really feel the solid craftsmanship in your hands. The 53mm size fits my portafilter perfectly, providing an even, consistent tamp every single time, which is key for a great shot of espresso. I love the ergonomic design—it’s comfortable to hold and easy to control, allowing me to tamp with precision without straining my hand or wrist. The flat base ensures an even distribution of pressure, which has noticeably improved the quality of my espresso, from the evenness of the puck to the smoothness of the crema. The polished finish gives it a sleek, professional look, and the weight feels just right—not too heavy, but substantial enough to make a difference. It’s easy to clean, and I can tell it will last for a long time. If you're serious about your espresso, this tamper is definitely worth the investment. It’s improved both the consistency and quality of my coffee, making it an essential tool in my routine. Highly recommend the MHW-3BOMBER 53mm Espresso Coffee Tamper for anyone looking to up their espresso game!

Great Engineering & Build. Consistent 29.5lbs. But thin base-plate. Small handle not ergonomic.
This is a well engineered triple-spring percussive tamper that uses top quality precision manufactured components. It has a measured consistent tamp pressure of about 29.5 lbs. It has a dampening mechanism that minimizes the main-spring reset percussion so that it only feels like a mild tap and cannot possibly destabilize the coffee puck. It is a significantly better tamper than the violently percussive XAQMHSW Triple-Spring Impact Coffee Tamper (see Percussive Tamper Details). The tamper has a firmly seated base-plate shaft that doesn't wobble and a very smooth gliding action when compressing down on the handle. The stated 58.35mm rippled base-plate diameter is accurate (measured with digital calipers). The base-plate thickness is not sated in the Product Description but I measure it as 6mm from the top of the base-plate to the tip of the rippled peaks on its bottom. Fortunately the thin 6mm base-plate does not effect the calibrated tamping pressure when used on espresso machines like the Gaggia Classic that require a minimum 9mm tamp-depth (see Triple-Spring "Percussive" Tamper Details). It also includes an extra 15lbs main-spring in case you decide to lower the default 30lbs tamping pressure (20lbs main-spring can be ordered separately). Cons: 1) The small bulbous handle is not ergonomic for applying 30lbs of force which is probably why they needed to add the flange so that you could also use your fingers when pushing down. A larger conical handle that had a 54mm diameter slightly convex dome-top, like the " FENSIDEN Double-Spring Tamper ", would have been a much better handle for this tamper so that an opened-hand palm could be used to apply the pressure. 2) The base-plate thickness is only 6mm which results in a minimum 6mm tamp-depth at the puck's rippled valleys (the puck rippled peaks are at a slightly less tamp-depth). I use a Gaggia Classic espresso machine which, along with standard home machines that have a commercial-grade 58mm E61 compatible grouphead, has a minimum 9mm coffee puck tamp-depth clearance requirement (measured from rim of filter-basket to top of compressed puck). Most high-end 58mm professional tampers have a 9mm base-plate thickness that better accommodates this puck clearance requirement and avoids mangling the compressed coffee puck against the grouphead water-screen. With this tamper you need to always accurately weigh your filter-basket dose to make sure it compresses to a depth greater than the minimum 9mm clearance limit. A 9mm thick base-plate would have alerted the user of an overfilled filter-basket because the tamper leveling-plate would not be in contact with the filter-basket rim if the puck tamp-depth is less than 9mm when the tamper bottoms-out at 30lbs. A 9mm thick base-plate would also have given the tamper significantly more weight and lowered its center of mass. This combination would allow the tamper to function as a make-shift coffee puck leveler by simply spinning it in the loaded filter-basket prior to tamping. FYI - Triple-Spring "Percussive" Tamper Details: Single-spring and double-spring leveling tampers produce lower tamp pressure as the coffee puck tamp-depth increases. Only triple-spring leveling tampers can produce their calibrated maximum pressure independent of the puck tamp-depth. They have an internal release mechanism that stops the main-spring from compressing any further once the maximum calibrated pressure is reached, regardless of the tamp-depth. Triple-spring leveling tampers are also sometimes called "percussive" tampers when their pressure control mechanism stops the increasing main-spring compression force by suddenly releasing the compressed spring. This sudden percussive snapping-back of the internal main-spring, resetting it back to its initial compressed state before the tamp began, is what causes the tamper's "click" sound and the "tap" sensation. Excessively violent main-spring reset percussion can potentially cause structural cracks to form internally in the compressed coffee puck. Well engineered percussive tampers have an internal dampening mechanism that prevents excessively violent percussive resets.

This is tops if you are a fanatic of making an exactly horizontal puck
Making a good puck requires, among other things, that the upper surface be absolutely horizontal. This guarantees that. I also like the concentric circles in the surface pattern, they fit in with a good puck screen. As for the uniform density of the puck, you do need separately some means of distributing the ground coffee. Your choice on that. This solves the problem of the horizontality of the upper surface, totally. Best tamper I have.

HOW MANY TAMPERS DOES IT TAKE?
If you have more than 1 tamper in your collection, chances are you didn’t start with the MHW-3Bomber. Manual tampers make you guess how much pressure to apply and how to get the coffee level in the filter basket. Many spring-loaded tampers solve the pressure issue, but not the leveling problem. And then there is the question of depth with the spring-loaded models. Some are adjustable, which means you have to reset them for different dose quantities. The MHW-3Bomber solves all of these problems. It is engineered with three springs in a brilliant design that automatically adjusts for depth. It automatically delivers an ideal 30lbs. of pressure every time. It has a moveable outer ring that rests on the rim of the filter basket to ensure each tamp is level when you press the tamper down. To put a nice bow on it, this tamper delivers a reassuring “click” when the tamp is completed! The engineers of this tamper thought of everything. To lessen the problem of excess ground coffee migrating up and over the standard tamper base, they offer sizes to compensate for that. My 58mm filter basket for my Gaggia Classic uses a 58.35mm Bomber Tamper—problem solved. Finally, in order to help eliminate channeling and to get more even water distribution over the entire puck, the Bomber features a stainless-steel ripple design base. On top of all this engineering, this tamper is a well-made, quality product that looks great. This is the last tamper you will ever have to buy…it’s that good. Attached pictures show the Bomber tamper in a Knodos bottomless portafilter and a Gaggia regular two-spout portafilter.

Love it
Wonderful for getting consistent results. The tangible and audible *Click* when you achieve the desired pressure is exactly what I expect from a top quality product, and they deliver. Be aware that the 2 spring version of this tamper does NOT make that *Click* sound and feel. I love products that are over engineered. 8^ )
