Q: Mainly want to use a dry mop for a new wooden floor? Does this work ok when dry to remove dust etc? Most reviews refer to using it wet. Thanks

It's excellent as a dry mop. We use it mainly for that purpose on our wood floors. But it's great as a wet mop as well.

Q: How do you wring out excess water? Does it fold to squeeze it out somehow?

You don't need lots of water, just spray the floor lightly with water & it will do the cleaning. However, if you do get it too wet then remove cloth from mop & hand squeeze it. Works fine with me, never have to squeeze it out.

Q: How long is the handle when collapsed?

Q: I am totally foxed by the 'dirt removal scrubber. What do I use it for and how?

I think it is to scrape off little fluff bunnies and bits of loose dirt and this enables you to use it more before washing.
