thrilling survival story
A 13 year old boy survives for 56 days with no fire, no food and no shelter. How did he do it? A very exciting story, a good read for 12-16 year olds.

Great Book
Bought this for my 10 year old. He reads on a little higher level and he really enjoyed this book! Was entertaining and thought that is was very appropriate for 5th or 6th grade level. The words were big enough to cause him to ask sometimes, but no so many that he was frustrated.

A great story and lovable character.
“I have a friend, he thought—I have a friend now. A hungry friend, but a good one. I have a friend named fire.” (87) These words were spoken by the main character Brian, in Gary Paulsen’s book, Hatchet. This is my favorite thing that Brian says throughout the book. Brian is the only survivor of a plane crash and he ends up all alone in a dense forest, with his only goal being to survive until help arrives. I like these words because they show Brian’s resilience and specifically the progress he makes in the way he thinks about his situation. He is excited that he has made fire - he is one step closer to surviving. Readers will love this book and will love rooting for Brian. After he crashes he feels extremely scared, unsure and completely alone. There is nobody to help him. His survival depends on him and him alone. Brian’s character development is uplifting. He finds himself in dangerous situations that make the story suspenseful and interesting to read. Brian encounters wild animals, starvation and loneliness, but he gains courage as he learns that he can survive. As a reader, you find yourself hoping that Brian does well. For most of the story, Brian is the only character in the book.. I felt like I knew him personally by the end. He works hard, he tries to learn new things and he never, never gives up. Brian is inspiring and the way Gary Paulsen writes about him, makes you want to keep reading more. Without a doubt, this is a book you shouldn’t miss. I would recommend it to anyone who likes suspenseful action, a loveable character and a great storyline.

Hatchet, The Call
This is the fourth book in the series and probably the least interesting, Brian did not fit into a normal life after all the time he had spent in the wild, he has a fight with and hurts a boy and is sent to a counselor, Brian went to see the man and was surprised to find he was blind, the man Caleb was very interested in Brians adventures and got him to tell him about them, it was decided Brian needed to return to the wild, Brian went to see Caleb everyday and started to buy the things he needed starting with a good bow and arrows, Brian knew a Cree family the Smallhorns from his last adventure and was to go and see them, a plane took him to within 100 miles, he was to travel the rest of the distance by canoeBrian arrived at International Falls, paddling along the lakes a deer jumped into his canoe overturning it, all his stuff was in plastic but he was ok, one night a storm destroys his tent, as it is blown over an arrow pierces his leg but it is easily taken care of, Brian has very few adventures following this as he heads to the SmallhornsMy verdict, the four books in the series actually become worse as they are written and shorter, this one is up to you whether you decide to read it or not

Excellent adventure and good lessons
I bought this after it was recommended on a YouTube channel I watch. It is a quick read, as in a few hours max at only 160 pages. But it packs a lot in. My mother and son both read it before I did and we all agreed it was a really good book. Excellent lessons for youngsters about not giving up and the strength or a positive attitude. I will leave it there for you to enjoy the journey yourself. Buy it and enjoy it.

Utterly rivetting, Unputdownable Brilliance
I ripped through this in a day then handed it to my 10yo daughter who inhaled the thing in one sitting! Utterly brilliant adventure about a child left to his own devices in the wilds of Canada... how he survives with nothing but his mind, his will to carry on and a resolute never-give-up attitude. Superb.

A lesson in survival
A well paced, attention gripping tale told with the minimum of dialogue. I found it as a recomendation at the end of another survival story and it was well worth reading. Pity there isn't an e-book version, especially as the thirtieth anniversary edition was released in 2017.
