A great read even for non-rugby fans
While I certainly wouldn't describe myself as a big rugby fan, I dipped into this book following a recommendation and found that the mix of history, tragedy plus plenty of humorous moments kept me reading until the end. Even without knowing a lot about the sport, if you like big characters, you'll love this book!

A thought-provoking and entertaining look at some of rugby's characters
A wonderful book celebrating some of rugby's biggest characters past and present, written sensitively by someone who clearly adores the game.I really enjoyed reading about the celebrities and finding out new things about them - Finn Russell, Sonny Bill and Danny Cipriani - but even more, discovering those that played it many years before, like Ray Gravell and Moss Keane. David Campese's foreword was spot on, too - I'd like to see more international rugby players playing the game like he used to.Ripe for a Mavericks 2, I reckon...

A epic look at some of Rugbys greatest heroes!
A super exciting read, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about some of World Rugby's biggest personalities, including James Small, David Campese and Sonny Bill Williams.

New stories and perspectives on rugby to broaden my perspective.
A winning mix of stories about well known players and cracking tales from those that were new to me. As an Irish rugby fan, I loved being reminded of the life of Moss Keane but Marnie Cunningham wasn't someone I was familiar with and it was a fantastic to learn about his extraordinary life. Recommended reading for all rugby fans!

Excellent
Rugby’s one of those sports that seems to make room for the odd. It’s hard to picture another game finding space for this collection of exiled princes, sculptors, political campaigners and flat out head cases. The twenty chapters flew by, eighteen of these players I’d love to have bought a drink for, I’d cross the street to avoid the other two, all of them have fascinating stories.

As entertaining as the mavericks themselves!
Really well written and researched book, any rugby fan will find this enjoyable. The author has found interesting stories about the players that goes beyond just what they did the pitch eg one of the mavericks was also on Gladiators etc
