Buy a braided cable instead.
Worked for 3 months. Today it caused the sound in the headphone to only come out the left speaker, I imagine because the plastic cable would twist and curl up so the wiring inside must have been degraded. I use AKG Y50s - I now have a braided cable which I got from Amazon Prime same day delivery. I hope the use of a braided cable means it won't degrade the internal wiring.

Good quality replacement cable
Perfect replacement for AKG headphones. Fixed a dodgy channel not working. Better quality than the cable they replaced.
