Took a break from my reading to write this review
Warning:LONG read. But this review will come from someone who is burnt out, intimidated and have done her best to avoid taking the GED for almost two decades. And someone who is really struggling to move forward without a GED. But someone who wants ALL of you to pass. So I will review with my honest opinion and will say if I recommend this or not.——————————Update #1: 03/24/23 Social studiesRelearn/learn online practice and real testing.1st attempt of practice test, PASSED with 148/2001st attempt of real test, PASESS with 157/200Ok. This part took me AWHILE! I hated Social Studies to begin with. I hated it since being in my motherland and when I came to the US. This is my weakest subject of all! I read this section twice on and off and very inconsistently since January. But this reading made me interested and fascinated about everything it covered, that I one day would really love to read and learn more. BUT, if you’re like me, hated it and barely really learned anything in grade school, and tackling this without knowing how the test will go, you might be bombarded with all the information! The way I learn is to really understand the concept, and memorizing EVERYTHING. I can learn without pictures. I found it impossible to memorize this section. There are hundreds of names and dates alone to accompany events, etc. I just couldn’t. As much as I found the reading interesting, I started to get withdrawn “from leaning for the test”, if that make sense. I felt very discouraged when I found myself not retaining many things after finishing reading it for the first time. I really didn’t know how I could pass the test. On my second reading, I decided to set a test date (two weeks time) and divide all of the pages within two weeks to reread per day. I just thought whatever happens, happens. If I fail, at least I’ll know how the test goes and I can better prepare for my retake. Two weeks in, I took the online pretest to see if I’m ready, and I scored 148/150 “Likely to pass” and was given the green light to take the real test.My pov about the pretest: OMGosh, nothing like I expected. Most of the questions were similar to Reading. You’ll need to learn how to make inferences, differentiate between facts and opinion, understand original text to compare which rephrase is the most accurate, etc. Note, I’m not the fastest reader as well, so I ran out of time from having to reread almost every questions because, I’m just not good at “reading”. I had to seriously guess the last two questions just so I can answer them within 10 seconds, in hopes that I guessed the not obvious incorrect answer lol. When I finished, I honestly thought that bombed it, there’s was no way I passed it. But surprisingly, I passed and I was allowed to take the real test, which I decided to take the next day. Since taking the pretest and seeing how the real test would go, I felt really hopeless. Yes, even though I passed the pretest. I thought there was no way I can do better with more questions, with now my nerves getting into me, and on top of that, a live person watching me. But again, I thought if I pass, I pass. If not, depends on how low I get, I’d either retake it right away or move on to the next subjects. My current thoughts about the book so far. The two Social Studies practice tests, were nothing like the real test. They were a lot easier, because they leaned more to really memorizing and understanding what you’ve read. Which is NOT a bad thing. Honestly, and this is the truth, if I didn’t learn or relearned everything I read on this section of the book, I wouldn’t have passed the test, period. You still need the background of knowing the basics of social studies and apply them to the skill the test tests you on. They go hand in hand. You can be good at reading but if you don’t have the background, you may not pass it. So far, I’ll say that this book is more than good enough to “pass”. I’ll update again after relearning/learning and testing for math. Don’t think this book is not good, because it is. Someone said it’s college level, it’s not. No big words used, even easy but uncommon words were still defined. It covered A LOT and has SO MUCH info but they are straight to the point without fillers (things you don’t need to pass the test). After taking the pretests online, you might reflect on a queation or two and think the book didn’t cover “it”. For example, I got a map question where it asked something like, by looking at the map, where do you think these people started their travel from? You may jump into over analyzing the map looking for keys, etc, but really, you just have to remember and apply what you learned. For example, people colonized America. The colonies were from the European continent, so obviously they traveled east across the Atlantic. So they started east. Don’t over think.Note: that wasn’t exactly how the question went. Just giving a similar scenario due to copyright. My advice on this subject:I’m the type of test taker that would stay up and sometimes even pull an all nighter the night before the test no matter how much I know the materials already. But this test, I knew I would need a good night sleep to have a clear mind, so do that before you take both practice and real tests. Also, stay positive as much as you can. I couldn’t at all times and I believe that it was a huge factor why my score was so low. I even beat myself up for a couple of days for getting such low scores. But all I needed was a 145 to pass. And my goal was to average at least 150 per test because I need a min of 600 for my GED to be accepted for my BSN program. I got a 157, so that’s good!——————————I just received the book today. I skimmed the promos and intro and thoroughly read the Secret Keys and Strategies. I found them very helpful. At 35, and done with all my Pre-Nursing classes, you’d think I would’ve know those by now. They are worth reading. After that, I jumped right to the Social Studies section as it is my weakest subject back in grade school. I found them very boring, and being in the state of Nevada and our 49th/50th level of education didn’t help either. But ’nuff of the regrets and blaming. I’ve been using Mometrix for many exam prep: TEAS, Hesi, placement exams, now GED (I know, why so backwards?). The way this book is laid out works for me. I find it more thorough than another book I read before this, which I stopped reading because it was all over the place. I got the 2020-2021 edition back in 2021 when I found out our local Adult Ed. H.S. lost my GED record, but I didn’t even open it until last week. My toddler is now in pre school, and I now have some time to study again and decided to continue and apply for the BSN program. Opened the old book, started from the beginning but something didn’t sit right. It felt like I was missing some things. I wasn’t comfortable proceeding with my reading. To note, I left H.S. In junior year back in 2005, passed my GED and was able to start college in 2008. I was on and off due to work (was independent at a young age) and illness. It may seem like I have some higher education background, but I’m being honest when I say I was really dreading studying (I wouldn’t even call it reviewing, more like re-learning) and taking my GED. I felt so hopeless because I felt like, I no longer know 90% of what I learned in H.S.. Most of the things I learned in college were also already slipping away. And whatever else that I still know, doesn’t help me out on this book since it took me literally 12 years just to finish 9/10 classes of pre-reqs/pre-nursing. So I decided to invest on this newer version (investing on my education). I’m glad I did! This newer version is about 98 pages longer. Meaning more reviews and possibly more updated information, for instance science, science is always evolving right? My first impression, “wow, I’m returning this. All they did was add some basic review that you should know already”. A few more pages in, “Oh wait, these are info I needed to start of with, that’s why I wasn’t comfortable proceeding with the older version”. I knew there were many things I needed to touch base with first, but I don’t know where to start since, well, there were so many. Some of the added reviews may seem too basic and a waste of time. Yes, maybe for some. And for some, they are helpful. I find myself in the middle, so all I do is skim/skip the parts I do already know. So far, I’m more confident about the re-learning and reviewing process toward taking my GED test with this book than I was with the previous version. Not only that there are added basic reviews (tips and tricks, vocabs, etc.), as I thought, there are also new informations added. The sub-sections are also more organized/clearer to me. Please see some photos I provided. I could only post a few due to copyright. But I think they’re good enough to give some idea. The current version is also a bit more simplified. If you read the Bible, and have read both NKJV and NIV, you’d understand lol. Now, I know I said I’m more confident, I meant I’m more optimistic about it, rather than dreading it. I don’t know if this book will suffice to get me to pass the actual test, I will update my review after I do take the test. Everyone’s learning/education level is different for sure. I may pass it and others maybe not and vice versa, but I will update to say if this book is at least a good foundation to start your learning/re-learning with. What I can say for now is, I wish I had this book back when I was in h.s. school. I feel like, it’s a cheat sheet. It’s straight forward and easy to understand. I would’ve read this prior to coming into class so I can prepare before I saw many crappy/lazy teachers back in grade school. I loved and still love school, but there were truly a lot of times that teachers couldn’t or just don’t want to teach. They just pop a VHS/DVD in the player, require you show up to class as proof, and call it a day, you pass without even learning. Sorry, blaming again.Btw, I decided to will go through this journey one step at a time at my own convince because I am still burnt out from my pre-nursing classes and CNA course. And I really don’t want to take a lot of time away from my toddler who currently needs me at his early learning stages. But get started and get this book! I’m happy with it so far. If I’m not distracted, I’m actually hook on it, if that makes sense.

I have been on and off waisting time to get my GED for over 15 years. I finally made the initiative to purchase the study guide. This is amazing! I love that they give you practice tests and videos to understand everything better! I just started but I am more confident with this book than any teacher that has stood in front of me.

mostly well done
Mostly well done. I use it to help guide my adult students to perform better at the GED. Having a workbook available would be helpful to practice skills. All the review videos are helpful and well done however the 2 additional tests should be printed in the book instead of having to go to another link.

Hopefully you have a college degree for this book
I bought this for my husband to get his GED. Long story short the math in this book is almost as hard as the math I did in college. It is not for a person who hasn't been to school for awhile. The math I. This book is not needed for a GED where I live. Definitely not an entry level book at all. After a weekend with this book my husband is discouraged about even getting his GED.

The book is okaish- but there are mistakes in it.
The book is helpful if you work on it but:- there are mistakes in the math explanations and answer keys. It's confusing and a time waster.-I bought this book as it said 3 full practice tests but you don't get that. There are no full essay examples, let alone 3. You get a link - but even when you go there you don't get the essay samples. I was expecting it to be better.
