Arguably the best wide angle zoom lens ever made
Along with the other two remaining 'holy trinity' of Nikon Lenses (AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm and AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm), this lens does not disappoint! This particular lens is my favourite out of the three (which is saying something) and produces crystal clear, sharp and beautifully bright rendered images with each shot. Attached to my Nikon D800, there are many more 'keepers' after shooting with this amazing lens! Indoor and interior shooting with this lens as an absolute joy, as is landscape and architectural photography. However, these fine optics from Nikon come at a price (a fairly hefty one at that for a wide angle lens) and there are some minor niggles; it's heavy and the protruding parobolic curve and size of the front lens means you cannot use screw on filters of any kind, including a protective UV filter so be very, very careful using this lens when you're out and about. As others have mentioned, there is no vignetting and negligible barrel distortion. It is quite possibly Nikon's best produced lens and I am one very proud and happy owner. Expensive? Sure! Indispensable - definitely. Forget all other wide angles - this is the one! Thoroughly recommended.

World Class Optics – But make sure you get a good copy!
After reading many reviews and deliberating which wide-angle lens to buy I decided on the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8. My first copy had a slight auto-focus problem where it would occasionally slightly miss the optimum focus point on my D800; it was 99% perfect but that 1% bothered me and so I asked Amazon for a replacement. Amazon’s response was top notch: I asked for a replacement on the Saturday evening and the replacement arrive on Monday morning. I’m glad that I ordered from Amazon’s own warehouse stock. The replacement was 100% perfect and the image quality is breath-taking, very sharp wide open at f/2.8. What really amazes me is how good this lens is at the widest end of 14mm and I can appreciate for myself why photographers sing and dance about this lens; it’s optics are in my view truly World Class and it’s made in Japan. It’s expensive, yes and you can't attach a protective filter to the front, that’s true, but the image quality is simply stunning, only make sure that you receive a good copy, if it isn’t get it replaced straight away. I’m now one very happy owner of this stellar lens.

Exceptional
This lens got high marks on all the important test sites around, and deservedly so. I won't repeat what has been said and written frequently about its optical merits. But you should be warned: This lens is not for general purpose; it is a highly specialized tool for those who can handle 14mm (ie, those who don't want to "get it all in one shot", but know that this focal length is for special views and effects), and it is a stunning, yet but expensive, solution for 24mm, where it has less distortion and issues than many primes. I treat it mostly as a "two in one" package and rarely use it anywhere between the two extreme lengths. Another thing to consider is its large front lens which protrudes the built-in shade, so flare can occur even when the sun is slightly behind the photographer. To get the best out of this lens, you need to think your way to a great picture. If you don't want to do this and prefer an easy "point-and-shoot" lens, get the 16-35 VR.

The penicillin of lenses. Cures all ills!
Very versatile and now available cheaper now that the "Z" version has arrived. Perhaps a slightly lower contrast than the 24 1.4 and 35 1.4 primes I use but fine in less bright light. Can do so much with it. Easy ductile handling; I prefer to manually focus mine using the D850 focus comfirmation bottom left of the finder and this works fine. Sharp across the frame.

Very sharp even at the edges. But much larger and heavier than the Sigma lens it replaces for me.
May be very sharp but barrel distortion is worse the my previous Sigma 12 - 24mm lens. However one or two clicks in Lightroom, Lens Corrections, Profile settings and it is gone. Lightroom has a built in profile for this lens. The lens must have been designed with this in mind and this is how they can make it so much sharper. If you dont have Lightroom then this will be a problem hence only 4 stars.

The focus system did not work, it was impossible to get any part of the image sharp.

I put it on the line of Nikkor's best glass. This is the case when you have to open your wallet for having great stuff! That's it! Sharpness and colours it delivers are great (if not amazing)! This is such an interesting lens - not really a fisheye and not really a 'normal' lens. Something in between. But this is what makes it very attractive (at least for me) since it brings additional chance for creativity. After you put files on distortion correction they become flattened and files looks like 'normal' ones, but with broader perspective. I keep away from giving any kind of recommendations, but for one I am sure - this will be the last peace of glass what I will sell out if hard times will come over! Roger? :)

Gracias.

As a real estate and architectural photographer, I literally make a living with the use of wide-angle lenses. And, the 14-24 is up there as the finest wide angle zoom lens I've used, with only the Zeiss 15mm Distagon prime being on par with the 14-24. Picture quality is outstanding. There is minor barrel distortion when used at the 14mm end, and minor vignetting when used wide open at 2.8. However, the barrel distortion quickly dissipates as you zoom in some...and vignetting is gone by f/4. Corner to corner, the images are extremely crisp (as opposed to its little brother, the 16-35mm lens, which is horrible at the wide end) throughout the entire zoom range. There is very minor light falloff to the corners at the wider end when also used at 2.8, but it's hardly noticeable to all but the most strict pixel peepers. Color distribution and contrast is well managed...I have never noticed significant color fringing (chromatic aberration) at any f stop, even in wide dynamic range environments. And, this lens does a remarkable job handling scenes with wide dynamic range in general...for landscape photographers, that's an extremely important trait, as this lens renders bright horizons/skies with darker foregrounds extremely well. In these situations, the image isn't oversaturated with colors that are harsh to look at. Instead, it tries very hard to render the image how you want to see it. It's rare that I have to do much desaturation of an image with this lens. It's somewhat heavy, but easily hand-holdable if you so choose. For a comparison, physically its sort of a little version of the 200mm f/2. It's a bit bulky, but not long, so the camera doesn't suffer from significant (and annoying) front-tippage. As a result, its nice and balanced when used on a tripod. The biggest drawback to this lens is its inability to hold a filter in the traditional, screw-on way. Instead you have to opt for an aftermarket filter holder like the Lee SW150, which is a contraption that mounts to the front of the lens, making it possible to hold 6" X 6" filters. The Lee filter is not cheap, so if you intend to use this lens with filters, be prepared to invest a lot more than just the cost of the lens up front. That said, using this lens with the SW150 proves to be easy, and very rewarding. This lens absolutely shines for long exposure photography in landscapes and waterscapes. I've shot many a waterfall, rivers, beaches, and farmland in long exposure with the SW150 and neutral density filters, and it all works to perfection, consistently and accurately. On the 14mm ultra-wide angle end of this lens, the depth of the image literally pulls the viewer into the scene, a beautiful trait for landscape shots. On the longer end, the distortion levels out and you get an outstanding, wide-normal perspective that is exceptionally well balanced from corner to corner. Autofocus is quick and practically silent...you can hardly tell its working, which is the highest praise I can give an autofocus mechanism. Manually focusing is simple and enjoyable. The focus ring turns smoothly and affords the photographer the ability to precisely nail the focus point, without any "drift" of the ring after you release your grip. The focus ring stays firmly in place if you re-compose after focusing. The construction of the lens is top notch. It feels as if it's hewn from a magnificent chunk of composite granite. It's solid and rugged...easily able to survive a clumsy drop or two, and holds up just fine in poor weather condition. To sum it all up, you will never find a better wide angle zoom lens on the market, anywhere. If you can afford it, don't even think about it...just buy it. You will have no regrets.
