It is passive. Acts as a jumper. Works well. Run it from a high resolution GPS to a 1080 HD TV. My desktop is much clearer on letters than the TV. But for presentations it works well. Haven't tried it on a 4k screen.I work with large spread sheets and that is a great tool.

Q: Will this work for the Oculus Rift?

I don't know about the Oclus Rift, but I have an old Dell Latitude with a docking station. The docking station has the DP instead of HDMI. I use it with a HDMI Bi Direction switch and USB switch for keyboard and mouse. Works great on the Dell docking station. Hope this helps. Denny

This adapter, as the Amazon ad states, "only operates from a DP source to HDMI" meaning the computer has a DP (DisplayPort) and the monitor is HDMI, not vice versa. A video card in the computer with DP output can drive HDMI and DVI monitors with this adapter cable. However the opposite, driving a DP monitor from a DVI or HDMI video card output, won't work. DP uses different signaling standards than HDMI and DVI. You don't need a cable, you need HDMI to DP Converter (approx $40- $100)

If your tablet is equipped with DisplayPort connector (which I doubt), then Yes, otherwise No. Note that DisplayPort and DisplayLink are different things.
