Used this book for a "Gamer's coding camp" for teens to learn programming. Good book with website support for code samples and extra game code.

Easy to follow
I can't believe someone really made a "review" with one star saying "I didn't read it"! Just made me feel compelled to write my own review, because it deserves a higher score than 3.5. I had very little computer/coding knowledge before picking up this book by chance. In one sitting, I made it to chapter 4, because everything has been so easy to follow and kept me excited to keep learning more. I can't wait to continue, and eventually apply this knowledge in the wild!

Fairly Basic, Encourages Exploration
This book is targeted towards "gamers who want to code," but it's really a basic intro to web dev with games as the gimmick to teach you the concepts. You start by learning HTML/CSS for building basic inputs and applying very simple styles. You are then introduced to the basic building blocks of programming with Javascript. You have your basics such as: variables, data types, conditionals, loops, arrays, and objects. You learn a bit about EventHandlers, image codecs, basic animations, and a little on debugging.I bought this book thinking it would appeal to me because I like video games, like League of Legends, Monster Hunter, Mario Bros, but this book doesn't talk about games and how code would be used to make those games. Not even on a conceptual level. Instead it tells you can make rounded borders with border-radius: 10px;It's really teaching the most surface level knowledge. Do yourself a favor and just follow a tutorial on YouTube for HTML/CSS/JS. Like a code-along to make a game. This book is so surface level it hurts, and it won't be a very good reference for later since it simply glosses over minute details.Being a programmer is about learning and tinkering, so I feel like if you have 0% experience coding, this book might be a good gift for your 12 year old to read and maybe get a spark to learn programming. But even then, they could learn everything from YouTube and official documentation.
