Works great. IR Thermometer is Invaluable Bonus
This is one of those tools that I couldn't quite justify buying for a while. But now that I own it, I use it plenty often. It wouldn't be my first addition to a toolbox, but once you've established a good baseline, it's a nice, small one to add. It does not have a light on it. I assumed incorrectly that it would. I use the temperature gun very frequently. Some uses: - Diagnose poor house insulation - Figure out the coldest parts of the fridge (important for getting optimal meat storage). - Lots of uses when cooking. Note: temperature range is limited compared to a full fledged IR heat gun. Also, be aware that a material's emissivity can throw off temperature readings (beware of shiny stuff mainly).

Quirky instrument
TWO USEFUL FUNCTIONS BUT AT TOO LOW A PRICE For anyone doing electrical and especially HVAC troubleshooting, the Klein Tools NCVT-4IR combines two useful functions, namely, a non-contact electrical tester and an IR thermometer. Multi-function tools usually come with compromises, and this one is no exception. At the $50 price-point, this tester is not in a sweet-spot. It needs to be cheaper for what it is ... or more expensive for what it could be. Let me explain: DEAD AS IN NO POWER DEAD As other reviewers have mentioned, my unit has gone dead more than once. Dead as in no power dead. As a former service manager for an electronics company, I was able to replicate the no power problem. The negative terminal battery connection is made between the battery space metal barrel and the battery cover end cap (that does contribute to IP-54 dust intrusion resistance). If the batteries aren't seated properly or the cover is not screwed down sufficiently, the metal contact in the end cap does not close the circuit, and the result is as has been found: no power. So far, the unit has functioned when it could get power, so I suspect it's simply the contacts. Still, a device advertised to withstand a 2 meter drop onto concrete should not be so sensitive to the battery end cap tightness. Another reviewer described a broken end-cap -- possibly caused by trying to complete the power connection. (Just a guess.) IR THERMOMETER UTILITY The d to s ratio for this unit is 4:1 meaning the measurement circle is 1" in diameter at 4" away and 10" diameter at 40" away. That means you have to be pretty close to the object being measured to get a good picture of its temperature. The laser dot is helpful, but it also can be misleading if you think you are pinpointing the temperature. Instead, you're measuring a wide, 4:1 circle. I would prefer an 8:1 ratio, but I suspect it would be more expensive to build. IR THERMOMETER ACCURACY Accuracy could be better. All but the most expensive IR thermometers have an accuracy of about ±5ºF over the performance range. This one is no exception. My unit consistently reads low. It's normal and par for the price-point, but keep in mind this unit will give you a ballpark, not a precise IR temperature. (Emissivity is fixed at 0.95 also a common practice.) NON-CONTACT AC VOLTAGE TESTER The non-contact voltage tester has performed as expected as long as the unit gets power from the batteries. The blue tip light confirms the function, and the chirp and a flashing red light indicate the presence of AC power. Always test on a known live circuit, but I've never had a problem with any NC tester when the indicator light was working. NOT IN A GOOD PRICE-POINT Finally, the cost or rather value. I don't want to be Klein Tools' quality control agent. I would rather the unit be cheaper and a fair value for how it currently is built or be more expensive and more reliable. If Fluke made a comparable instrument (they don't), my estimate is it would cost around $100 - $150 and be at the perfect price-point. Klein (and Fluke) -- are you listening?

RUGGED - RELIABLE
This thing is built like a Mack truck… rugged, heavy duty for sure. I’m only a Navy electrician, not a real electrician, so consider the source. For the first time I feel like I may be able to trust a non-contact voltage indicator…. the box full of other ones I’ve purchased in the past all leave me with no trust at all in non-contact voltage detectors. So far, I cannot trip this thing up. I’m beginning to place trust in this instrument detecting even very low AC voltage, reliably 100% of the time… just getting close is enough to give a real firm indication. Online evaluations also find this a dependable non-contact voltage detector. The temperature reader/laser pointer is a huge bonus, seemingly quite accurate. I’m wondering why it is built so rugged… its supposed to be a pocket instrument, but only if you have really large pockets.

Great tester
If you are using this at work, like me, your master and others will most likely look at this one funny. It is a lot larger in the hands, however it detects through Safety and GFCI with no issues. The Laser distance meter is also very accurate, but I like to use it as more of an actual pointer to note out areas.

Had this for a few days before I tried it, first tried on known live wire seem to work, then tried of plaster board wall for 6M and it gave reading of live wire the whole length of the wall did not matter high or low it was live readings, I knew it was wrong as I only put that wall up last year. Swiftly returned it before it got me into trouble.

Having a dual range non-contact A/C tester, combined with an IR thermometer is really valuable. With the thermometer option works for many trades. From auto mechanics to Electricians and HVAC technicians. The 2 setting low voltage enables you to chase low voltage AC control circuit.

The NCVT-6 is a useful gadget with great potential; however, I've encountered an issue where it starts beeping and malfunctioning after placed on my vest. As I often work outdoors, it's possible that some sweat may have come into contact with the NCVT-6, and it wasn't open , but unfortunately, this has hindered its functionality, as it goes haywire in less than 10 minutes of use , I am not happy at all
