Works as Intended, Extremely Light, & Comparatively Quiet!
It does exactly what I bought it for. My 15" laptop overheats a lot, as I haven't yet changed the likely melted cooling pad around the processor. Add to that the fact that I often put the laptop on my lap in bed, therefore it's also on top of a blanket, and you can imagine how hot it gets. The cooling pad has so far worked very well; it's kept the laptop cool whether I place it on a desk or on my lap. It's fairly quiet - it's quieter than my laptop when overheating, at any rate. It's extremely light, so much so to the point where I'm not even sure it's 1.4 lbs as the manufacturer states. It feels as light as a feather. If you want a good pad, I would highly recommend this one. I have yet to test it while playing a video game, as that uses the most processing power, so if the pad can successfully keep it cool through that, it would be amazing. So far the most I've used it with is playing movies, and it's been perfect through that, so I have high expectations and hopes for the gaming test. I've also left it on for many many hours at a time and it was fine. I've seen other reviewers mention that it's cheaply built and parts around the USB have broken. I haven't had it very long at this point, just two weeks, so nothing has broken yet. TL;DR: Pros: - light - can be placed anywhere, on fabric or on a desk, and still works - successfully cools an extremely hot laptop - doesn't take up a USB spot as it replaces the one it uses with a port of its own - works fine with extended periods of time Cons: - You have to be careful how you hold it if you're transporting it while its running, as it is a little flimsy so if you hold it in the wrong area, it will push the top part of the plastic (where your laptop is sitting) down and into the fan, creating an absolutely horrible noise, and that could also break the fan.

Excellent solution for a 17" MacBook Pro
I did a lot of research and review reading before choosing this cooling pad for my 17" MacBook Pro which runs very hot when charging a battery & when using Photoshop CS6 for intensive design work and also when client computers are connected to it for repair of those units (running TechTool, DiskWarrior, etc.). Recently the OEM battery ended up splitting apart -- now that could be from heat OR defect or both -- and I didn't want to have the same issue with the replacement battery which is brand new (non-Apple) and not cheap. The pad is JUST big enough to hold the 17" MacBook. It made a huge difference within minutes of being used with the laptop charging a battery and displaying a movie! The top surface near the screen would normally get very hot when a battery was being charged especially, but within minutes of the cool pad being in use, the surface is barely lukewarm. The bottom of the laptop which gets very hot during battery charging and intensive use was/is many degrees cooler. PROS: * Very open design allowing for maximum air flow from all sides. * Sturdy metal grill over the whole top surface (probably aluminum, though it feels a bit rigid for it to be pure aluminum). * Excellent air flow! More than I expected, actually. * VERY quiet (21dBA according to manufacturer specs.)!! The typical laptop cooling laptop fans (for both Macs. & PCs) are far louder and, in the case of my MacBook Pro, would completely drown out any noise coming from this cooling pad (when running at full speed). Definite bonus to have the cooling pad running with very little noise! * Very sturdy and quite big rubber feet on the bottom ensure that slipping on surfaces isn't likely. With the added weight of a laptop sitting on the cooling pad, I don't see how it would move even if cords are accidentally yanked. * Speaking of cords, the channel underneath the unit for the USB cord is very well designed and effectively keeps excess cord length out of the way. * Nice long USB cord so the unit can be plugged into any available USB port on any laptop -- be it on the sides or the back. * Pass through feature on the plug is very handy for laptops with limited USB ports available. Since the plug is a bit "chunky" some may not like to deal with it on the sides of their laptops -- especially Mac. users -- so I'll note that the cooling pad DOES work just as effectively when plugged into a USB hub. This is where the additional cord length would come in handy as well. I didn't try it with a USB power unit plugged into a wall outlet, so I can't say if that would work -- though I can't see why it wouldn't. * Flip down feet on the back bottom surface allows for tilting of the laptop. Handy because the cool pad does raise the computer up about 2". The angling "feet" would also serve to increase airflow even more. * Stays on even when the laptop is put into "sleep" mode -- at least with Macs. it does. Some of that will be dependent on laptop make and model.... Many PC laptops cut power to USB ports when in "sleep" or "suspend" mode. CONS: * Minor --- do wish the product came in at least a silver/aluminum finish. * Minor to Moderate --- would be nice if the unit had an optional power adapter connection for those who don't want the unit to drain power from a laptop running on battery power. Also, as noted above in the pros section, some laptops cut power to USB ports when in "sleep" or "suspend" mode and all do so when the computer is turned off. This is a con because those computers are still capable of charging batteries and, thereby, heating up. Macs. especially get very warm while charging batteries. So, how big a con this is depends on your individual computer's functions. * Moderate --- the pass through connector could & should be much smaller. It sticks out quite a bit and I can see how someone could damage the USB port by hitting the connector accidentally. This risk is only magnified when another USB device is piggy-backed onto the already big connector. This is also where a power adapter would come in handy so users wouldn't have to plug it into their USB ports, thereby eliminating the risk of damage. The plug itself if well constructed and quite sturdy, but, because it IS so tough, the ports could easily sustain damage from accidental impact. NOTE: The cooling pad has a raised center grill directly above the fan. I note this only because I'm not sure there isn't a laptop out there somewhere which doesn't have "feet" to keep it slightly raised above the surface it rests on. If your laptop doesn't have "feet" you may have some difficulty resting it with any stability on this cooling pad. CONCLUSION: All in all, I'm very happy with this cooling pad and would definitely purchase it again. As an Apple tech. support provider, I'll also be recommending this cooling pad to my clients! If you have an Apple laptop that you use for more than just surfing the web and word processing, this cooling pad is an indispensable tool to extend the life of your computer's hardware. You don't need fancy LED lights, etc., which just draw more power.... A cooling fan just needs to cool a laptop efficiently & effectively... That's what this unit does and does it well!

Works great but it has a limited useful life
Broke today. One of the fan blades broke today and now it wobbles. Not horrible, but it needs to be replaced. Purchased the item in June 2013. I think this product works very well at what it is designed to do: Keep the destruction of excess heat away from your laptop. I use my laptop most often ON MY LAP. That is where this falls a wee bit short and how I ended up with a lopsided fan. The top surface of the cooler is metal. That is great! The bottom of the cooler is plastic that flexes. That is not great. That plastic flexes so much that if I shift to answer the phone, or pet the dog, or somehow my leg ends up against the bottom of the cooling pad in the middle of the pad, underneath the fan itself, it will cause the plastic housing to flex and to hit the fan blades and make a horrible sound. And evidently, as I learned today, it can end up snapping off one of the fan blades itself. The truth is some items should almost be considered to have a limited life and you cannot get upset when you have to replace them. Things like these cooling fans are one of those. Handheld vacuums are another. They are relatively cheap, they perform a much needed function, but they wear out and need to be replaced. Now, if Coolmaster put metal on the bottom of this thing like they do the top, it would probably not have a housing problem such that it would break the fan. But past cooling pads have broken for me at the USB connection to either the pad itself or the notebook computer, and so if the housing held up, I might still end up with a broken cooling pad at some point. That said, for less than $20, and for a year and a half of excellent service, I will buy another one and ordered one today. I'd be willing to pay $10 more if they put metal at the bottom of the housing and I could probably squeeze another year out of this, but evidently they've decided plastic is the right material for this pad, at least on the bottom.

Love this cooling pad works really well

I haven't used any other laptop cooling pads before, so I can't comment directly on how this compares, but I'll explain my thoughts: PROS: * ONE LARGE FAN: This was the main reason I went with this instead of other MODELS. Benefits are obvious for anyone who's built computers before, but essentially larger fans don't need to spin as fast as smaller ones, so it's noticeably quiet * NOISE LEVEL: it's not "silent", but it's definitely quieter than my laptop fans for sure. Absolutely. In normal use if my laptop fans are on and I plug this in, I don't hear any additional noise (as in, before the laptop fans start really ramping up) * COOLING: again, I can't comment for others, but this fixed the issues with my laptop (HP Spectre x360 model with intel 10750h and GTX 1650ti). Previously, I couldn't really use my laptops max capabilities because it would thermal throttle after just 20 minutes of playing most games. Since getting it, I haven't experienced thermal throttling at all. Even after 8 hours, no issues. The laptops surface isn't royally cooking either during gaming. I use this on my bed, and even on top of a pillow (without the legs open) I haven't had issues with it either. * BUILD / DURABILITY: it appears to be fairly durable, made of what feels like aluminum. The corners and edges are reinforced with more aluminum, and there's no bend to it. In the middle of both sides, there's a thinner area to make it easier to pick up the laptop and cooling pad together. * fairly sleek, black on all sides with no RGB, which is nice. For what it is, it "seems" light, but again, I have nothing to compare it to. * cable management: you can move the cable to either side of the laptop (or back). Doesn't matter where your USB slot is. CONS / Areas it could improve: * BUILD: one thing I'll comment on regarding this: despite the handles, you can pick up the cooling pad / laptop from wherever you want, but don't carry it like a tray from the dead-center middle. The grates aren't strong enough to support that, and the fan might get pushed and grate/ram into the other side (slightly). Had this happen to me accidentally 2 or 3 times, but no issue with the fan from those incidents, and it's easy to remember not to do that. No issue otherwise. CABLE MANAGEMENT: there is cable management on the reverse-side of the laptop (strictly for the usb that it comes with, mind you). But it's quite tight to get it to fit/lock-in in the middle. Once you do, it's quite secure tho. On the other hand, the cable management on either side is kinda so-so. It works, but it's not perfect. Just loops around knobs essentially. USB ITSELF: it's double sided, so you can still use your USB if you wish. Personally, I found it's kinda large for what it is. There's much thinner adapters out there, so I wish they just didn't include it personally. * SPEED OPTIONS: unlike other cooling pads out there, there's no speed options or setting for the fan. Again, it is relatively quiet, but I do wish there was at least a "slow" setting for when you really don't need the extra cooling. No issues with keeping it plugged in 24/7 tho, just a thought. * THE LEGS FOR THE COOLING PAD: they're quite "meh" in all honesty, but I haven't had the need to use them. The height gain is fine, another inch or so added, and adds a slightly curved angle if you want. But the silicone at the bottom of the pads is reeeeally not that grippy, and the clips don't "lock in" as strongly as I would like. I found that they'd frequently flip back down with the slightest of movement. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS * keep in mind, this is for a ~relatively big laptop. Mine is 15", and to seems to be around 16" in size. If you have a smaller laptop, there's definitely other options * personally, I think it's "slim" but I have nothing to compare it to. Its about an inch thick if I had to guess. I'm not sure if there are thinner models, but I've certainly seen much thicker instores.
