Review: Great description of what a record producer's function in the recording process - This book and s a very well written guide into the world of music production. I was astonished when about a year ago a young artist referred to a producer as someone who comes up with beats for a Hip-Hop song. I knew better than that. Bobby's down to earth and easy to read approach to writing made the subject matter both understandable and enjoyable. For anyone who truly wants to know what a producer does I highly recommend this book.

The Music Producer's handbook.
I've been studing music production for almost 4 years, and I have never found a source like Owsinski's book. In this book you'll find every thing you've been looking for, from the basic concepts to very interesting and important lessons, about how to write a song, how to make a musical arrangement, etc. I'm so very glad to have found this treasure, I recomend it, no problem at all, you will enjoy it, I'm sure about that.

Best books I ever bought on the subject of audio recording
This book is a fantastic read for those in the need for information on producing. It was so good I gave it to my son who is now in college studying to be a music producer. I started reading from this author with the Recording Engineer's Handbook and followed it up with this book. I also bought the Mixing Engineer's Handbook. Great books for home studios to use and for the pro's. The best money I ever spent on books for this topic. He uses simple terms and language to understand.

A comprehensive and an essential reference for producers and studio musicians alike.
Highly recommended for those seriously interested in a music career. Covers the fundamentals of music production and recording. Covers good exert advice and summaries on editing, mixing and mastering. The book also covers the history and business aspects of production and the role of a good producer. I give it four stars for its expertise on the subject and its comprehensiveness in the content matter. The only critique would be to add a section on technical aspects of audio recording, using DAW's and a chapter on the basics of music theory and song form. Perhaps something reasonably covered and reserved for other volumes. Regardless this is a primary text for a music production course for sure.

Excelent guide with a lot of deatails
As always Bob Owsinski delivers a great book filled with details. As a hobbyist sound engineer and producer this book explained every single detail that has to be considered in the process of producing an album, budgets, sample rates, methods etc. Also The explanations are very simple and very work oriented. If someone is interested in the process of producing and recording this is a very nice asset.

You will really understand what producing is all about. ...
You will really understand what producing is all about. You will also realize many who say they are producers do not have a clue and don't do a fourth of what this book explains.

nice but...
...it is a tad too generic. Many aspects of music production at this depth resemble common managing problems. Anyway the book sheds some light on the record production process and gives some ideas. Maybe I was just looking for something more amateurish and less USA-centric, something along the line "use these filters for guitars" or "beware when mixing in the bass with other instruments when...". The interviews in the last pages are interesting but not particularly enlightening.

If you don't know about something, it will give you a good overall. If you already know about some of the information given, this book will help you keep on track and organized.

Even if you've been recording for a long time, this book serves as a great reference for producing music. Perfect for those starting out, it gives a great overview of the producers role, along with great advice on how to deal with a multitude of situations, and how to run effective sessions. I run a recording studio but I'm not actively involved in sessions, so I bought this book to help fill in a few blanks, and to help me better communicate ideas with my engineer/producer and highlight areas where we could improve the experience for the artists who book with us. Definitely worth a read.
