Ideal Bulbs: Best Software, Easiest to Configure, Prettiest Colors
I've tried a variety of automated light bulbs and these are the best. They offer ease of setup, the most deeply saturated variety of colors, the best software, the widest variety of third-party software, and they work beautifully with Alexa. On the other hand, they're the most expensive light bulbs I've encountered. My journey with Philips Hue began with this three-bulb starter kit, which included the Hue Bridge. The whole thing was an absolute breeze to set up, where I plugged the bridge into my router and followed the software directions. I installed two of the bulbs in a sconce I have in my office that is reminiscent of Roman ruins of Ionic columns. As you can see by my photos, there's quite a variety of effects you can choose, particularly with a pair of them -- one of these light bulbs is pointing up and the other one pointing down. My only complaint besides their excessive expense is the fact that when you place a lightbulb in a fixture, the switches that previously controlled that fixture are suddenly superfluous. I partly solved that problem with one of Phillips's smart dimmer stitches, which allows the uninitiated to my abode to turn these lights on and off in the traditional way. However, that switch doesn't let you control the spectacular color spectrum of which these lights are capable. Overall, I'm impressed with the color range and quality of these lights, and I ended up adding another to my collection. I only wish that other companies (I'm looking at you, Lutron, which just discontinued its only Hue-compatible switch) would simplify their compatibility with these remarkable lights. Alas, we'll have to wait until the hyper-competitive "smart home" market shakes out and someone creates an easy-to-use control system that rules them all. Even without that, these Phillips Hue bulbs are a worthy addition to my automated lighting system.

Absolutely amazing lights!!!
During Prime Day I saw the Hue Gen 3 starter kit was $139 so it was a no brainer to try it out. I was extremely excited to receive it, so when it arrived I opened the package and saw this: a broken bulb. I was immediately let down and kinda upset. So, I hopped on Amazons chat help line figuring I'd have to send it back. Nope, didn't have to send it back! Instead, a replacement set was overnighted free of charge and all I had to do was send back the two leftover bulbs, plus the rest of the replacement kit. Wow! I was stunned and almost speechless at the stellar customer service. Thank you Amazon! As far as the lights themselves? Near perfect. The automation is a nice feature and the color range is awesome. At the brightest white which is at 6500K I have to turn them down to 80 percent because they are so bright. The colors are a bit dimmer but that's to be expected. I imagine they will get better as new generations arrive but if anyone is thinking about purchasing these lights right now don't hesitate. Before I forget, watch some YouTube videos on how to set them up. The instructions are pretty useless so YouTube is your friend. Also, IFTTT (If This Then That) is a great applet program that sets up some neat light scenarios. Hue Labs is another useful website that allows more automation. For instance, I have 2 white only Hue bulbs in my patio light fixture set to turn on from dusk until dawn. That was set up through Hue Labs. I hope this was helpful and feel free to ask any questions and I will try to answer them!

Gorgeous
I got these for my birthday last year in October, these lights are amazing, Iām going to go through the cons and then the pros. So, they advertise that you can acces the lights outside your house but I find this to not be true it like wonāt connect which makes sense considering that the lights connect to the internet which leads me to my other con, you want to go home and just turn on your lights instantly but not all the time but sometimes it will take a while for your phone and the lights and the internet to connect together in order to go to the app and mess with the option of lighting. Sometimes they wonāt connect to the internet and this hadnāt happened to me recently more when I first got them but I havenāt had a connection problem on a while, if it does though just reset the bridge and youāll be fine. The pros, omg when I look back at my old lighting situation I cringe so hard, once you get these lights in your room or specified area, and mess with the settings you will never want to go back to the old light set up. You can make your own settings of neutrals or colors like the one in the photo I provided. I would recommend reading other reviews and watching other vids to see all of the benefits of the app and the lights. I put one in my living room and two in my room, the settings like spring blossom or costom settings are better with two or more lights because you have a bigger area to play and put one color on one side and one on the other, eventually I might want to get more lamps in my room to get more lights to costomize it even more but two is plenty for all the settings. The last bit of information I have to share is that if you want to put colorful lights on, in order to make them look the most vibrant is to put them on at night so no natural lighting is leaking through and weakening the color. I would highley reccomend these lights to anyone looking to spice up their lighting.

I've been interested in Philips Hue bulbs since I first saw them a few years back, but it always seemed like a novelty to me and for the price it wasn't worth it. But after hearing how they're compatible with Google Assistant (or Siri if you're on iPhone/iPad) and IFTTT, I decided to try them out. The bulbs are expected to last 15,000 hours or 15 years (whatever comes first) so that was one reason I could justify the hefty price tag. In addition to that, because they're LED they use a lot less power than incandescent even though they're using wireless connectivity. This is in part to the Zigbee wireless technology that has much lower energy consumption than Bluetooth or WiFi. Another cool thing about Zigbee technology is that it creates a mesh network, so each Philips Hue light bulb will improve the wireless signal of all nearby bulbs. The setup is very easy, simply plug the Hue Bridge using ethernet into your WiFi router and follow the instructions in the Hue App - basically just press the button the Bridge when it asks you to and it'll find the newly installed bulbs no problem. The range is great! I was a bit worried about placing the Bridge in the basement which is directly below where I'm using the Hue bulbs right now, but they work no problem. The bulbs themselves are not a traditional round A19 bulb, but will fit in the same standard E26 base sockets as A19 bulbs. Even though the shape is different, the light cast from these Philips Hue bulbs is very comparable to standard LED A19 bulbs. These are the 3rd generation colour bulbs that have "richer colours". I haven't used the other generations, but I'm very happy with the colour palette these bulbs have. For "white" light, you have a broad selection of warm (yellow tint) to bright white (blue tint) options that provide a warm relaxed or more energetic ambiance in the room. The colour range is just phenomenal, with wide range of greens, reds, blues, purples, pinks, oranges, and yellows. The Hue app allows you to select a colour or "scene" for the lights, so you can fine tune the colours to suit whatever you prefer. You can also dim and brighten the bulbs individually or as a "room" (group of bulbs) to suit whatever ambiance you'd prefer as well. I would highly recommend getting the IFTTT app and Wink apps to improve the functionality of the Hue bulbs. Using IFTTT (which stands for If This Then That) you can do neat things with your Hue bulbs like making them turn blue when the Maple Leafs are playing, change yellow when there is storm warning, or blink when you're on your way home from work so your family is notified you're almost home. IFTTT also integrates with Google Assistant on Android phones that have it and with the Google Home device. Using IFTTT you can set up custom voice commands that adjust your Hue lights like saying "party time" to set the Hue bulbs on a cycle through all the colours or saying "bedtime" to turn off the lights. The possibilities are endless, and it adds so much functionality to this bulbs it's surprising Philips hasn't built it in themselves to their app. I haven't played around with the Wink app yet, but I'm told it allows better integration across Smart Home products, so if you have other devices like a thermostat or WiFi power outlets, you can group them all into the Wink app to configure them more easily. I'm very happy with this kit. These are truely "smart light bulbs" and this technology is only going to get better with time. Since they last 15 years or 15,000 hours, I think the price point is worth it when you consider the long term. I plan on adding a few more of the white Hue bulbs to my home in places where I don't need the coloured bulbs. But for entertaining areas like in my living room, these bulbs are great. The other more useful features like remote dimming and on/off are really convenient to have. I highly recommend them and I hope that I can have smart bulbs in every light in the house one day - that'd be convenient and very fun.

Ok I was a bit pulled back with the price but the quality of the light (dim to bright) is better than most all other LED bulbs I have bought recently. Maybe price does reflect quality. The connection was really simple and fast tom setup and it's loads of fun to create sets of lighting colours to reflect the mood (reading, relaxing, meditation or dining) and they respond almost instantly to commands. Well thought out product line.

I have been impressed so far with the Hue lights. Since buying this starter kit I have expanded to about 15 lights with a combo of white and colour plus wireless dimmer controls. I was wondering how well all the lights would respond, if timing would be off, or only some respond, but so far all the lights respond rapidly and in perfect unison flawlessly. My only negative is I found the Hue app a little non-intuitive when it came to advanced functions like creating custom scenes for the dimmer controls to use. I tried Googling it, but only came up with good demos about earlier slightly different versions of the app and after much messing around I literally stumbled over how to do it. Hiding in plain site, it was easy enough once I found it, but not at all obvious before hand. One set of lights has now become a dinner bell of sorts, instead of screaming down to the kids in the basement TV room to come for dinner not sure if they heard, I just flash the lights in that room.
