Excellent sound quality, very good pressing quality, no defects, a master work of recording
Vinyl – this is a good pressingWarp – non flat and level no edge warpSurface noise – quiet no audible surface noise no pop’s hiss or crackleNo fill – no obvious pressing defectsCover – well made nicely presented coverA good quality pressing with excellent sound qualityExcellent sound quality, not quite reference quality. This review is of the 1994 version NOT a later remaster. The recording clearly demonstrates Boris Blank’s studio abilities more than 20 years ago. If compression and other studio techniques to create and change sound are wrong where then The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds” and The Beatles “Sergeant Pepper”?I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile. • Clarity - excellent • Channel separation - excellent • Channel balance – a dynamic mix which fully utilises both channels helping build a detailed sound stage • Sound Stage – very good, warm and detailed. Wide with many interesting details to find and identify • Distortion – non audible • Compression – all recordings have some degree of compression, that to a large extent is determined by the sound the artist wanted. It is valid a choice as the the artist determining the type of synth to use. What is a problem is compression that restricts the frequency range or response to a specific limited range or band. This recording does not sound limited having excellent highs and lows. As with most Yello recordings the dynamic range is outstanding. • Atmosphere – a warm intimate recording showcasing Yellos’ talents • Bass – low frequencies – tight, punchy, very good. Can “slam” when needed, indeed this recording has touches of early Pink Floyd “Set the controls for the heart of the sun” • Treble – high frequencies – transparent, detailed complex, easy to listen to as not shrill or tiring. • Vocals – detailed, warm, engaging, intimateAs a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.

Bad pressing of a great album
Was excited to finally get one of my favourite Yello albums on vinyl. Arrived safely (no cover damage) from UK to Australia quickly. The issue was something to do with the pressing (2021 release, barcode 0 602435 719443). There was a light 'substance' (possibly transfer from the paper inner sleeve) you could see on the record surface in the light, but whatever the issue was the record sound was bad. Crackles and noise not just between the few tracks I played, but during the tracks. It sounded like an old second hand record that had been poorly cared for. Unusual for German pressings which are usually excellent. It was painful to listen to. Thankfully Amazon has a great return policy - I would have liked to have tried to get another one instead of returning it but refund was the only option I was offered with this particular item.
