I take 2000 mg per day; two caps am and two pm. for prevention dose. I used to be plagued with frequent large, painful cold sores from sunshine, having a cold, immune problems, sugar binge, whatever. I also use l-Lysine ointment (any drug and most grocery stores) on my lips along with general sunscreen whenever I go out for longer than five minutes in sunshine or cloudy weather, and of course immediately whenever I start to get a cold sore. No more scarring, and far far fewer events!! It works! Also, for fellow sufferers, big help is a padded ice cube held to lip for pain and quicker reduction. ALWAYS BE SURE TO GET IT AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. Even a cold wet cloth is better than only using ointment. I used to take 1000mg tablets, but they are quite large and sometimes got stuck painfully in my throat. These caps can get stuck too, but drinking something and having a slice of bread nearby take care of it, and I don't have the pain from the hardness either. 2000 mg daily is a good dosage for maintenance; I add two more a day along with ointment if I actually start to get a sore. Rare, now (usually a combo of eating dessert and sunshine!) But after so many years, I keep myself attuned at all times to my exposure and lip condition, so I can tell when the skin feels one getting ready to attack! Best of health to everyone!

I've only been using this particular product for a few weeks now. I'm rating it with 4 stars only to give it a bit longer, to see how well it does for me. Ship time was right on and I'm really impressed with the tinted, glass bottle it came in, like medications should! This is the first time I've tried the "free form", so I'm excited to see how well it works vs. the tablet!

When I was getting low on Lysine a few months ago, I couldn't find it anywhere. I'm so happy I decided to check Amazon, where they had the 250/ct bottle. (The 100/count was the max I'd ever seen on shelves.) Maybe it's due to its anti-viral properties, but this amino acid is frequently sold out, so I'm happy to have it. Solgar uses capsules instead of the large tablets (horse pills lol), which are very difficult to swallow and don't absorb as easily. For those finding even these capsules hard to swallow, remember that capsules, unlike tablets, float--so you have to put your head *forward* after taking a sip of liquid, instead of back. The capsule will float and will be easily swallowed. This is the place to get vitamins, too. Thanks, Amazon!
