Q: Is this compass liquid filled?

It's filled with oil, I know for certain because two out of three were leaking when they arrived.

Q: Can it be opened single-handedly?

Yes it can! There's a little notch where your thumb can just flip it open

Q: Mine does not work. It points the same way no matter what.

The issue I have is with 'glows in the dark ' have not figured out yet how to get that feature to work. Other than that is fine.

Q: is it latched securely?

In my opinion that is the week spot on this compass is the lid.
