An All-Star Tribute to Brian Wilson [DVD]

Very Good Live Audio Mix
First off, fast forward past the Ricky Martin stuff (what were they thinking?). For me, the concert begins with Paul Simon and his wonderful interpretation of Surfer Girl. Before buying this DVD I didn't know much about Vince Gill and hearing him sing "The Warmth Of The Sun" totally blew me away. Sometimes I put on this DVD just to hear Vince sing this song. "Surf's Up" is also excellent.Another favorite performance is Aimee Mann & Michael Penn singing "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times". Just amazing. Some terrific performances, some good performances, some ok performances. This DVD is well worth the money. As a musician, I especially appreciate the audio mix and the camera work. The mix is excellent and I recommend playing it loud. It's a great show.

This video is the next step in amazing return to public eye
My vow of poverty (empty pockets) kept me from attending this show. Brian Wilson is amazing. Prior to 1995, he was probably struggling to figure out what to do; then, a remarriage, a documentary about him, a collaboration with VanDyke Parks, a fresh solo album, two summers of tours, and now this tribute from a handful of rock's big and little stars. BUY THIS VIDEO if only for the Harlem Boys Choir (who better to sing his music besides the BBs?), the holy trinity which performed "Surf's Up", and Vince Gill's "Warmth Of The Sun". I'm not a weepy guy, and I'd never heard Gill's voice prior to this show, and his vocals at this show brought tears to my eyes. In fact, in reading the other reviews here, just reading the reviews bring tears to my eyes, remembering Gill singing "columnated ruins domino". Sell your timeshare, cash in your IRA -- do what you have to do to buy this vid and study a musical master's work.

A Fitting Tribute
Can enough accolades be heaped on Brian Wilson? I think not! To see his peers perform these songs must have been a pleasure and joy for Brian. For me, it was reason enough to go out and buy a DVD player! And it was well worth it! Once past that Martin boy, the Paul Simon solo performance was breathtaking...and just suggestion of the gems that lie ahead.Performers kept coming....Vince Gill, Carly Simon, David Crosby, Jimmy Webb, Elton John, Billy Joel and even some rockers from the present came to pay homage. Not to mention comments by Sir George Martin and Dennis Hopper!Having seen the Pet Sounds Symphonic Tour in 2001, I was well aware of the musicians that backed up every act - The Wondermints plus people like Jeff Foskett. The back up music MADE the concert the success that it was - the impeccable music coupled with 5-,6- and sometimes 7-part harmonies....just incredible.Anyway, thanks to TNT for showing the tribute initially...and thanks to all for this astonishing DVD....Brian is THE MAN!

Greatest DVD I've ever owned.
The first time I watched this was on a VHS Tape that I recorded when I was away on the 4th of July. I kept saying, I hope we don't have a blackout, I hope my tape is taping. I hope I remembered to put the correct channel on before we left, etc. Now in the digital age of TiVo and DVR's, those problems sound so dated. Today we click and say I hope we have the whole thing on disc or I set it to go a little longer than they advertised before it gets cut off. Anyway, that TAPE was played until it started skipping, no audio, etc. Now, this is all I watch. I even made a audio version of it for my car for long trips. This is a can't do without DVD if you are even a little Beach Boys Fan.

I can't wait
I was remembering this concert last night while in an online chat! Don't Worry Baby came on my radio.... I told my online friends that Billy Joel slayed Don't Worry Baby in this concert, and I mean that in the best possible sense! This tribute concert is unsurpassed, period. So today, I shopped Amazon, and whaddya know! Hooray! Thanks for reminding about the incredible Vince Gill! I just ordered this....after three years I am very, very eager to see this again. I agree it is a time-capsule concert, I've never seen anything better! To those who were there, envy envy envy, lol! Suffice it to say that after three years I still want it. It's comin, hooray again!

Wonderful Experience
Brian Wilson has shaped and changed the way music is heard and understood. This tribute DVD is one of the most amazing concerts I've ever seen. Vince Gil does Warmth Of The Sun as well as it can be done, and the rendition of Good Vibrations by the Wilson Sisters and the Beach Boy's Band with the Harlem Boy's Choir is simply the finest piece of music you can imagine: the beautiful voices, the flawless rendition of this difficult work and the full benefit of the choir is not something to be missed. This is an hour and a half of pure enjoyment and completes with a wonderful performance by Brian himself. Any Beach Boy's Fan will appreciate this Video sojourn into the works of one of the Masters of Pop Music. If there is any downside...it's that this album is not available on CD audio...or I'd be giving it to all my friends for Christmas.

Fun DVD Performances of Beach Boy Music
I can't believe I did not see this when it originally aired as I LOVE the Beach Boys and their music. It was worth buying this DVD just for Vince Gill's performance of "The Warmth of the Sun." He has a beautiful falsetto that is perfect for Beach Boys music. Elton John and Billy Joel also give excellent performances.

Surfer Girl Paul Simon
Brian Wilson , what impresses me , well Brian dosnt try to impress you , he is just such a modest guy. The stand out track for mewas Paul Simon doing Surfer Girl. It was worth the purchase for this alone. Wow....this guy makes it look so effortless. I noticed too like others a fluctuation in sound as if there was a loose wire in some parts.

Sound Quality
The sound quality on this DVD is poor. Seems to come and go. Had to turn the volume almost full blast but it was still fading. We did record the concert from the Performance Programme to our Sky Plus which is excellent but wanted to free up space by buying the DVD. Think we'll be keeping the recording.
