I read the reviews of this book and expected to get a high quality product but I have say I was blown away by the quality of the semi-rigid (not paperback) beautiful cover, paper quality, informative descriptions, and the incredibly beautiful photographs. I liked that it is nicely organized and it has a very good Table of Contents and Index. It's going to be a while before I complete this comprehensive book. The price of the book makes it a huge bargain. While many of the books in this category are children's books, be clear that this is not a children's book -- although older children can certainly enjoy it and learn from it. My only (slight) complain about this book is that I would like to have seen more pages in the Gems section, more on each type of gem. But then of course, the book would have been 4 times as large -- and more expensive.

Author included basic information and LOTS of beautiful photography including raw stones, some examples of uses, and a dash of history. Great for casual coffee table learning. I am enjoying it (to my surprise). Glossary is a bit weak-may want your dictionary nearby until the terminology takes hold, does not give chemical composition formulas, but does explain possible natural deposits and where found throughout the world. Index is very good. Copyright date is 2016. I did buy a used copy that was in stellar condition-thank you so very much. I personally am enjoying the read. Text is 10 to 16 pts-very mature eyes compatible. Would make a great gift.

I ordered three other rock books and returned them all. The price of this one suggested to me that it wouldn’t be all that but I was so wrong. This book is amazing. The photos and descriptions and history and uses are incredible. I would value this book at $50. If you want to study and learn more about Rocks, Minerals and Gems get this book. It’s fabulous. Enjoy

Excellent for all ages. A beautifully photo'd teaching book.

I'm taking a star off because it doesn't have info on geodes. There's a lot of beautiful pictures, basic info and a bit of history but nothing in depth.

I love this book. The photography is beautiful and there are lots of i interesting side notes.

Beautiful pictures and alot of info! I got the hardcover. Would definitely recommend to beginner rock hounds who are just learning to identify rocks!

I bought 2 of these as christmas gifts and both kids lost their heads over them... ages 6 and 8. These books are IDEAL for young kids because they are completely full of high quality pictures and lots of random facts about a wide variety of rocks. This is NOT a field guide and is pretty useless for identifying rocks you've found, IMO. This book is better for general education about geology and entertaining obsessed kids. I would not consider this book if I were searching for help identifying rocks.

Gorgeous book for a gift, large beautiful photos and great information.

Great quality and substantial build. It didn’t take long for my 9 year old daughter to ‘soften’ the spring and she absolutely loves it. Her best Christmas present by far she tells me.
