Q: is the male connection on this gauge the same size as the hookup on the tank?

Yes it is. You should have no problem. The only thing I found is you must take it off to fill the tank. Then you can put it back on.

Q: I put this on a tank that I know is almost empty and the guage reads full?

Sometimes you have to have the propane flowing first before it actually starts to give a reading.

Q: How does the leak detector work ?

This propane tank level gauge/ leak detector works only by you visualy seeing how much propane gas you had previously and then looking at it at another moment and seeing if the level changed without you using it.

Q: Ours has started audibly leaking gas out where you screw it on after one year. Is there any way to fix it?

I have 2 of them and neither one has done this. However, I got my father one that did pretty much the same thing. He is a very fix it kind of guy and he told me there was nothing he could do to get it to stop leaking, so he threw it away.
