1 & 2 samuel commentary volume 6
I have been waiting for this volume for over 1 year. it was the last in the series to be released. i have both the complete ot commentary and complete nt commentary in this series. i have started other books in this series but never finsihed them. it is my goal over the next year to finish both the ot and nt commentary from holman.i have to say that these are excellent commentaries. i started with 1&2 samuel because it was the last one and i have waited so long for, but also i just started reading these books in my bible.the only thing i was hesitant about was these commentaries are based on the niv translation. i perfer the king james or the new king james. having said that there is alot of cross references to other translations, so dont let that be an issue.this really is an exciting series of commentary books. here is how each section is broken down.they group any where from 3-5 chapters in a section. there are 8 catagories that cover each section.1.) introduction2.) commentary3.) conclusion4.) life application5.) prayer6.) deeper discoveries7.) teaching outline8.) issues for discussionwhat i like about this series is the author tells of modern examples of life and people that deal with the chapters you are studing. there is commentary almost verse by verse or a couple of verses combined. prayer and ways you can apply the lessons toward your own life. and a teaching outline that can help a group study. dates are given to show what time events took place. there are a few cross references to certain verses discussed.if you want individual studies on certain books of the bible, this commentary is a great addition to your library. buy the set of the ot and nt and save big.if you want just commentary and nothing else and do not want to spend more money than needed. get a 1 volume commentary. matthew henry, john mccarthur, etc. or a study bible.what i did on my study for 1 & 2 samuel. i read 3-4 chapters of the bible then read the commentary for those chapters. i also used my go bible. (see my review on this). i take daily on my walks. so i read the bible, read the commentary, then listen to the bible again on my go bible. this really reinforces the lesson. also i watched a few dvds i rented from netflix about david, solomon, and their kingdoms. there is a great one called david and solomon expanding the kingdom by stephen ray. this dvd takes you to the exact places the king david visited. they show you some of the caves he hid in and where he might of wrote a few of the psalms. this has been an awesome experience studing this way. sorry so long, i just had to share it with everyone. GOD bless you on your journey for the truth. Pray to GOD for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of his word, and GOD will reveal himself to you. Decolores.

Great for anyone wanting to understand more
I have four of the series on the Old Testament (Isaiah, Jeremiah, I&II Samuel and I&II Kings) from this set of commentaries. They are well written for anyone wanting to understand more of events and customs that went on during the time of each book. You don't need the whole set, each book explains itself. The author quotes largely from the NIV translation but that doesn't matter. This book is not aimed for the scholar, but for anyone wanting more explanation than their study bible covers. You will be brought to understand what is being said through the mind of someone who lived in the period of time of each book. I recommend this to anyone who seeks a greater understanding of the scriptures, regardless of denomination.

This is a perfect book to use if you are teaching. It has great stories to go along with the Bible teaching and it explains the passages very well.

Such a fun book to read.
It was such a joy reading this book. Never realized reading bible could be so exciting. Reading the Books of Samuel is like watching a TV episode with lots of actions and drama.
