Review: As a former Intelligence Analyst, instructor, author and editor, and translator of other languages, I deeply appreciate fine details of how this book has been written. It's brilliant. And, as a mixed Penobscot and BIPOC individual who was displaced from my Indigenous family at birth, I cannot fully describe what this book means to me (but I'm going to try!). In spring 2021, I was reunited with my BIPOC family for the first time (I'm 37); I never knew where my Indigenous lineage was from, and learning that my parent was Penobscot, Cree and Black gave me a roadmap I only dreamed of. Ever since, I began to learn the Penobscot language here and there, and have practiced with my son; still I wished to have others to speak with so I could place phrases into context and fully comprehend what I was learning. Each month I've searched for resources, and was beyond overjoyed to find an article discussing the work that went into creating this book. I ordered it immediately, and received it today. The moment I began reading the introduction, I was in tears. As I flipped through it to see what had been so thoughtfully, carefully laid out, my heart was filled with gratitude. While I've connected with family, there aren't many of us, and none still live in Maine. Having this book in my hands feels like such a gift, an absolute lifeline in bringing me home to my people and my culture, something I have wanted for these many years. I'm excited to learn more and read, and to share it with my son so we can eventually speak to each other with respectful confidence. There's so much more I want to share, but for now, Kci Woliwoni, thank you, thank you, thank you. ~ Siobhan Kekoa Review: As someone who grew up away from Indian Island, this is a great resource to help fill in gaps in the stories my mom used to tell me.
