Another potentially frustrating book by David Getling
I purchased this book because I own a Casio-115ES Plus and want to get the most out of it's potential. I should point out that Casio’s own documentation is a combination manual for both the fx-991ES and the fx-115ES. Therefore one would assume they are operationally very similar calculators. I do not have a 991ES, but I do like my 115ES a lot. For its price point, it's a fantastic calculator and certainly should meet the needs of the average person who wants more than a basic calculator, but does not really need graphing functions.Gatling starts out criticizing anyone who purchased this calculator, as he feels the TI-Nspire is a much better device. It happens I have purchased a TI-Nspire CX too. It's a great calculator, but it is also a lot more complex, and not necessarily any easier to use.All that aside I was relieved to find that Gatling does include key strokes for his examples in this book and starts out with some really basic arithmetic, and shows how to store the numeric values into the calculator as A, B, and C.The problem is I had already learned to do this previously, but Getling's book actually confused me.In this case he shows the primary function of the key face, not the function you are actually using. For example the key face shows "RCL" when in fact you are using the shifted version of that key, which is "STO". This really messed me up. It's like saying, You type "5" when you want to indicate "%".His text gives no indication that you are actually using a shifted function. While he does indicate that a "shift" comes before the key you want it's rather unclear because he tells you to then hit "(-)" when in reality you are wanting to enter the alpha "a". As it turns out you don't need to hit the Alpha to shift to the "a" in this particular case. So it’s somewhat of an exception of the need for shifted keys to get the shifted function. This book is probably better than his one on the TI-Nspire, but not by much. Both are very confusing.Eventually you will probably be able to figure it all out by using other more comprehensible sources, but in all honesty I have a lot of questions about this guy's teaching expertise, as he states that this book, it is written for those students who refuse to listen to his advice to buy a different more expensive calculator. At the same time he declares that the 991ES for the price offers outstanding functionality, but he is horrified that many students are unaware of the full functionality of this calculator. If one knew the full functionality of the calculator from the outset, why would he or she buy a book that purports to teach the finer points of its functionality? At this point, I would suggest just watching Youtube videos on how to operate this particular calculator. That's what I had to do to figure out what Getling was trying to explain in his first lesson.
