It is strong. Works on aches. But beware it gave me a tooth and gum infection when I overused it.

Is it MEANT to smell like a dirty fish tank?
I make incense as a hobby. I've read up on calamus root and generally find it described as a sweet smell. One person even said it smells like wet cake batter. When my friend very generously gifted me a bag from this seller to play with over the cold winter months...I was quite shocked that this smells more like a fish cake than anything else. Checked for an expiration date and found May 2024...and I don't think I can get a refund on a gift, but I'm not impressed by something also known as' sweetflag' smelling like a dirty fish tank.

Not what I'm used to; to the extent that I have doubts that it is what it says it is.
About a year ago, I ordered some Calamus root from a Native American on-line "trading post". I'd been given some at a pow wow, and it really helped preserve my voice through hours of singing.The product from the trading post was great, except that it came in the form of very small pieces, as opposed to the nickle-sized chunk kept in the side of my cheek while singing, and I didn't like that it wouldn't stay in one place....So, I ordered this product, from Yogi's Gift, as it comes as large roots.When I cut a small chunk and put it in my mouth however, it was NOTHING like my previous experiences with the root. In prior experience, the root was somewhat bitter, and yet not altogether unpleasant. This stuff on the other hand, I could not keep in my mouth for more than a few seconds before coughing to the point of gagging. The taste is so off-putting. My instinct tells me that it is moldy, or rotten? I don't know, but even the smell is unpleasant, where-as the product from the trading post had a mostly woody smell. Can this stuff go bad? I'm not sure how to tell if it's just a powerful batch, rotten, or maybe not what it says it is.

Tastes great
On an empty stomach, a hot tea made with a shredded (using a coffee grinder) piece is incredibly relaxing.
