Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot

Easy to read, POWERFUL & THOUGHT PROVOKING
Love to read her views on traditional feminism. It really opened my eyes to the blind spots of traditional feminist writing, identification of problems etc. It was very thought provoking. I teach feminism views and realized after reading this what a biased model I was teaching. I included it on a reading list because it is so easy to understand with concrete current and real life examples throughout.

Must read!
MOVE OVER, ROBIN DIANGELO! If you're looking to find a deeper connection in your antiracist (feminist) journey, then HOOD FEMINISM IS THE BOOK. Ms Kendall offers an in-depth looks at ALL the intersectional issues that feminism should be focusing on, through the lens of those who are most impacted by a lack of support. Reading this book will give you the impetus to start actively moving forward towards a more inclusive form of feminism.EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK. It is educational, insightful, and inspiring. Ms Kendall offers up vulnerable examples from her own life that highlight what she's speaking on, as well as giving practical info and examples of what this more inclusive feminism should look like. Plus, Ms Kendall doesn't hold back. She gets in your face with the facts because these issues are incredibly important but are still being overlooked. And we can't make progress until we help the least fortunate among us.Feminists, and especially us white ones, must move from performative allyship to being accomplices who actively divest from white supremacy. WE MUST LISTEN TO AND LEARN FROM the "Marginalized communities [that] have already developed strategies and solutions as they do their own internal work. Now mainstream feminism has to step up, has to get itself to a place where it spends more time offering resources and less time demanding validation."I will definitely need to reread this several times though as there is so much good information here that it's hard to absorb it all in just one read. I had so many highlights!

Feminism like I know it!
I had this as an audiobook and after listening there were key points made that explained things perfectly. I ended up purchasing a physical copy so I could highlight and write.

Genius
This book is so scholarly written. The words are so beautiful and deep. She deserves the pultzer prize for this type of writing. Mine you, I don't support the LGBTQ, which her book rallies behind here and there, but other than that this lady is an Einstein how she writes lol.

Informal and emphatic read
Very thankful I was given the opportunity to enjoy and take in a read such as this one. If you're white, and a feminist, please incorporate this book into what you preach.

Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women a Movement Forgot by Mikki Kendall ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I am IN LOVE with this book! I got the audiobook, then 3 chapters in I had to pick up the e-book so I could make notes (hence the headphones). This is definitely one I'll be revisiting several times!...Hood Feminism taught me so much about how to make my feminism more Intersectional. I thought I was doing a pretty good job of that. But y'all, there is SO. MUCH. MORE. While I understood any issue that impacts women to be a feminist issue, feminism looks different to different people. Context is needed because needs vary based on things like socioeconomic background, culture, race, gender identity and more.👉🗨"As feminists we need to take critical, radical measures in listening to women in the poorest communities about what they want and need instead of projecting narratives of ignorance onto them. We must work to unlearn the harmful narratives we've been taught and that we created in response to white supremacy."...Ok. It's great I learned the things, but what am I going to DO with it? Hood Feminism restructured my brain on feminism, so I'm restructuring my fight. I've taken inventory of my giving and volunteer hours and am trying to diversify my impact to cover multiple causes often neglected by mainstream Feminism, including Hunger, Housing, Education etc.👉🗨"'Why can't we give everyone else the same support and access?' That's the battle feminism should be fighting."...I understand not everyone has the privilege to donate to causes monthly, or spend time outside of their jobs working for free at another organization and that's totally okay! But my privilege let's me do this. So it becomes my responsibility to try as hard as I can to bring the fight to as many places as I can. With my money, my time, my voice and my vote👉🗨"...if you have come to these spaces looking to take things away for your benefit instead of looking to contribute, then you're already doing it wrong."...Hood Feminism shows you how to go from self-proclaimed ally, to ally, to accomplice. And I am here for that journey!

An important read for White Feminists™
I thought I had a decent understanding of intersectional feminism but this book challenged that assumption in the *introduction*. Everyone should read this!

Enlightened
As a black woman, I’ve never felt so seen yet called out from a book before. It has enlightened me on how I too can sometimes further keep my fellow black women back by adhering to respectability politics and shined light and made room for the women who have never been thought of in feminist conversations.

Very well written and important information from a different perspective than mine. I'm really enjoying the book and feel I am better for reading it.

Must read for Caucasian
This is a phenomenal that gives voice to the voiceless. This book tells the story of women of color who have long being ignored by the establishment. We must understand that present day feminism is unequal and we can no longer pretend as if every woman is regarded and treated fairly.
