Review: This is the Bible for anyone who wants to follow the Campaigns on Napoleon. The thorough description of the campaigns are so in depth, and combined with detailed maps as to make the battles easy to understand and follow for even the lay person. It also gives an understanding of the nature of warfare at the time, with comprehensive descriptions of the types of units, and how they were used. It is the go-to guide for anyone wanting the solid, firm ground on the subject and its irrefutable authority Review: David Chandlers klassiska standardverk/tegelsten från 1966 om Napoleonkrigen med huvudfokus på Napoleon och Frankrike håller fortfarande i sin detaljrikedom och exakta genongångar av krigets olika skeenden. Tack.

What a stunner of a book and I only recently discovered it ! I thought I had the definitive book on Napoleon with Andrew Robert's Napoleon the Great. I loved that book but could have done with more military battle details. Raymond Chandler's book fulfilled the latter beyond my wildest dreams. His prose is awesome. It flows beautifully , highly detailed, highly readable. You also get Napoleons biography very nicely incorporated into the military narrative . There is a treasure trove of battle diagrams and maps that contain virtually every place name mention in the book. With some patience you can use these to see what Napoleon was thinking on the grand scale prior to a battle. There is fascinating detail also on the how the Revolutionary Army evolved and mind boggling information pertaining to how Napoleon kept control of his Army Corps for his Campaigns. I can't rate this book highly enough.

As simple as the title says, this is by far probably the must in depth study out there of Napoleon's campaigns, maybe even one of the most in depth studies of any campaign. Regarding material quality the book is also great, including some very beautiful and well made maps and illustrations. Some negative points about the book are: 1) Like the title says, its all about Napoleon, so if you are looking for something about, for example, the Peninsular War, you should look somewhere else. 2) Chandler is not as objective as some readers may want him to be, but still is a great study made by a true professional. In the end this point is more a curiosity than anything else. 3) The book is old and may be outdated, but is still a key reading. 4) This is not a biography about Napoleon, but an account and in depth study of his campaigns. Some key episodes of his personal and political life are touched, but if you want something more in depth regarding those points, like his relationship with Josephine, you should certainly look somewhere else. To summarize, a 5 star reading that I would recommend to anyone wanting to know more about the military career of one of the greatest generals in human history.
