Q: can the battery be changed?

If you are handy, you can remove the top of the unit with a small screwdriver and then lift the printed circuit board with the batteries mounted on it out of the plastic case. You will then be able to slide the batteries out of the battery tabs by pushing them out towards the edge of the PCB. Your recorded message will not be lost. Reassemble the unit and you are good to go. Thanks.

you can only record 1 at a time.

Q: does the batteries only run when you push the button?

Yes, the unit only draws power when the button is pressed either to record a message or to play the message.
