Needed for when you have no edge
I volunteered to sharpen a friend's set of knives and when I got a chance to see them there was hardly any edge to them at all. I did sharpen a knife with a 400 stone but it took forever. I got this to do my initial edge. It arrived in tact within the blue case. The case does not have an anti-slip bottom but I set it atop a silicone trivet and it started in place. I soaked the stone in water for an hour or so and used honing oil once removed from water. After a few rounds of passes on the rougher side I had the beginnings of an edge. Flipping the stone over to the smoother helped me actually get an edge. At this point I could cut things with the knife. However, I did have to go over to my 400/800 stone to continue and get a nice, fine edge. If I was sharpening my hatchet or maybe a lawnmower blade, this stone alone would probably do the job. For the price I'm glad I got it. I won't use it much except when I need to actually start the edge on a blank or very dull knives.

Coarse side is not 180 grit.
First stone came broken in half—no padding in the envelope with a brittle item. Replacement arrived with a chipped case. These should have some padding around the box from the factory. The rough side seems like 100 grit to me, definitely not 180 as in the description. Fine side is as described, 240. Narrower width than some. OK deal.

Good quality
This is a course stone. Great for repairing an edge on a knife or chisel any small cutting tool.

Essential if you need to remove a lot of material and don't want to spend forever to do it
Great product. Excellent work horse of a stone. I'm putting a very steep angle on a S30V Manix 2 as a f*around project and this thing gets some serious work done setting that edge. If you're not drastically changing your bevel angle this thing will set your desired angle very fast. Very handy for that reason. Avoids tedious grinding on less coarse stones.I only gave it 4 stars because my stone came slightly chipped on one side. Doesn't affect the effectiveness of the stone so I didn't send it back but it's worth noting.

From my experience, really not worth buying.
I'm not an expert sharpener, just sort of do my own personal sharpening in the kitchen and used to sharpen knives for a restaurant I worked at, so take my words with some skepticism. However, I've owned a stone that was around this grit before, and I swear it was not as easily worn down as this stone was. It feels like I used it ONCE and was already noticing dips and grooves in the stone. Perhaps I was using it wrong or something (I did soak the stone until the bubbles stopped), but the stone's slurry was falling off super fast. I didn't bother using it more than 3 times since it felt like the stone was wearing down faster than it was sharpening my knives. Personally this was really not worth it, as you could perhaps find better rocks outside that would last way longer than this. It was also a bit thin for my taste, but that's nothing compared to how poorly it felt like it was working.
