Aeromotive fuel pump speed controller really helps
I have a 1979 Jeep CJ5 that I built a custom fuel tank with 2 lift pumps (Walbro FRB-5) going to a surge tank with a Bosch 044 and an adjustable pressure regulator. With this system I can easily switch from the old dumb carburetor at 4.5 psi (Carter BBD) to the Howell TBI early computerized carburetor at 14 psi to the new Holley BBD at 64.5 psi. I have had problems with each and having to switch fuel systems & fuel pumps is a pita. So I designed and hand built a custom fuel system that allows me to easily switch by simply changing the connection to the carburetor and adjusting the pressure regulator. The 2 lift pumps combined push a minimum of 90 gallons an hour, while the Bosch 044 pushes at low pressure around 80 gallons an hour. Higher pressures fewer gallons an hour are flowed. The key to the setup is that the 2 lift pumps flow more fuel to the surge tank than the Bosch 044 draws.Being able to slow down the Bosch 044 ensures that when running the old dumb carburetor at 4.5 psi (Carter BBD) that the Bosch 044 does not starve for fuel by outpacing the 2 lift pumps (Walbro FRB-5) when idling or going real slow like rock crawling. The other benefits to slowing down the surge tank pump (Bosch 044) is that it helps with reducing and or eliminates cavitation. With the engine not running with fuel pumps running or engine idling, amc 258 idles at 600-650 rpm, very little fuel is being burnt. The Bosch 044 fuel pump could be heard surging which is usually what happens when there is cavitation. Slowing the pump down eliminated the surging, and provides for a quieter and smoother operation.Besides cavitation, it also helps with reducing heat, and the possibility of vapor lock. I rock crawl in the Arizona Desert when it is 100-120+ degrees with high heat reflecting off the rocks. The fuel system fuel lines are all braided stainless steel, which helps dissipate heat as the fuel is circulated from the fuel tank to the surge tank and back to the fuel tank. There are 2 feed lines one per lift pump to the surge tank and 1 return line from the surge tank for the fuel that is circulated by the 2 lift pumps. The fuel regulator is a bypass regulator that returns fuel to the fuel tank, volume depends upon pressure and how much fuel is being burnt. There is also a return line for use with the Howell TBI or Holley BBD, the Howell TBI requires it, but the Holley BBD can used with it's own return or capped off.The installation of the Aeromotive fuel pump speed controller was straight forwards and easy. It has the ability to adjust the slow speed of the fuel pump, and also the kick up to full speed. Which is controlled by the tach signal. Stock setting per instructions is roughly 50% up to around 3,300 rpm's then goes to full speed at around 3,300 rpm's. It seems that in my case it goes to 100% around 3,000 rpm's on the stock settings. There is an override switch which can be installed so that 100% can be turned on manually at any time.It does not sound like the Bosch 044 slows down by 50% on the stock settings, sounds more like at 75%, but there is most certainly a slow down. When first starting the fuel system the fuel pump is run at 100% for several seconds then slows down, the sound change is apparent upon starting the fuel system when it kicks down from 100%. I have my fuel pumps wired separately from all other electrical devices, therefore I can start the fuel system by itself without starting anything else.I will probably play around with the settings a bit, as the slower I run the Bosch 044 the better, and since this is a slow speed rock crawling engine that start's pulling at 600 rpm's and only runs up to 4,000 rpm's. There is no need for a high gallons per hour feed like a 600-1,000 hp engine.Rock crawling I usually run 600 rpm's to 1,200 rpm's with the occasional burst to 1,500 rpm's. Street driving depending on traffic generally shift anywhere at 1,000 rpm's to 2,500 rpm's. This is a low rpm engine and the Aeromotive fuel pump speed controller is a must have addition for my custom fuel system.

Looks solid
Looks good unboxed.. still need to get it on the carUpdate: works great. I did get on the website and study the pdfs relating to the device.A canbus rpm adapter and a resister they recommended to eliminate emi in the signal worked great.

Quality product
The product works as advertised, but the installation instructions must be correctly followed regarding power and ground connections.

Good
Check out the schematic for this before ordering it requires a ground wire run down to the pump. My pump is grounded currently to the frame nearby and will require some rewiring. Still highly recommend any Aeromotive product!

Did not work as expected
FOLOWED instructions to the letter. Would not change pump voltage no matter what. Emailed the Co, they sent another set of instructions which unable to attempt at this time due to weather and other issues. Will update after following 2nd instructions.
