Le Casanova de Fellini [Blu-ray]

I have tried to play it on all my trays including my Blu Ray player, but unfortunately the disc remains dead 😭

DVD regardé en famille sur mon lecteur-enregistreur de DVD. Le film : du grand Fellini avec toute l'extravagance et l'humour sarcastique qui lui sont propres. Quant à Casanova, son ambition suprême de devenir un grand écrivain n'a pas été à la hauteur de ses nombreuses conquêtes féminines. C'est ce qu'il y a -peut-être ?- plus intéressant dans son personnage.

Criterion left this one out of the Fellini box set. But this restoration of a classic movie is nicely done and worth collecting for the Fellini fan.

Fantastic, grotesque and spectacular portrait of the notorious Italian Age of Enlightenment's Renaissance Man and eponymous libertine. Fascinating, Freudian and high visual symbolic episodes of his travels through Europe is surprisingly unflattering, often nightmarish and unerotic (not to mention sweaty). Casanova is portrayed as an egotistic intellectual whose destructive hedonism and inescapable biological urges reduce him to a foolish performer, and leaves him a sad, homesick, discredited and disrespected old man. His life- a series of games, a mechanical bird his companion, women toys, the love of his life- literally a doll. Though entertaining, this is certainly not a Tom Jones romp, nor the fairly shallow 2005 rom-com, far more indicative of Fellini's flamboyant color films- Satyricon in particular. The lavish sets, perverse costumes and Nino Rota score all stand out, but too strange and bizarre to be offensive or a serious biography, a bit too over indulgent (to paraphrase the line in Annie Hall referencing this film). It's ironic that this film gained somewhat the same ill reputation as Casanova himself here. In my opinion this is definitely an overlooked work, highly recommended to fans of Fellini's outrageous style: Satyricon, Juliet Of The Spirits, City Of Women, etc. This Blu Ray of the restoration looks great, contains an audio commentary on the film's production, as well as the welcome addition of the Italian language audio track (which I prefer) even though the film was released in English. I also highly recommend Criterion Collection's Essential Fellini box set to complete your library of one the greatest director in cinema.

This movies is an Excellent Classic. One of the greats. However, it would be nice if this movie was available in Australia ! One of the about the important points, it was Well restored.
