PLC Programming Using RSLogix 500: Basic Concepts of Ladder Logic Programming

Just what I was looking for
This book is just what I was looking for. I am a mechanical/manufacturing engineer and often build automated production equipment. Though I have had a number of PLC classes in the past, this set of books is a handy medium level refresher. While I can get a lot of detail from the AB online manuals, I cannot stand to read them in my spare time on a plane, bus, etc on a device screen. These books are perfect in size for a sideline gaining of knowledge. When I need more depth I can look at the AB manuals. There are also helpful examples in the books. My only complaint is the printed ladder code can be difficult to read, especially if a rung is highlighted.

Great overview
I needed a quick intro to this type of programming so I could speak intelligently with a programmer about it. This book gave me the overview I needed to make a better impact on my project. It certainly requires the reader to have a basic understanding of logic and relay controls, along wtih some concept of programming. It is not a replacement for a full-on ladder logic training course. However, if you need to füget a handle on what is going on inside your PLC, this is a very good place to start.

An excellent introduction to RSLogix 500
This book serves as an excellent introduction to RSLogix 500 and the fundamentals of PLC programming in general. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner and doesn't throw too much at a novice programmer too quickly. I would recommend that readers have at least a basic understanding of industrial electricity, motor controls, and relay logic before attempting to delve into PLC's. I would also recommend that you use an RSLogix 500 simulator (these can be found online relatively cheap) to practice with while you are reading this book. This book series also serves as excellent reference material for an experienced programmer, which is my intended purpose.

Not as good as I had hoped
I haven't completed the book yet, but have two problems with it. I have been an electrical/mechanical tech for 35 years, but never a programmer. I could do basic stuff like upload, download, burn to EEPROM, and a handful more with the programmer walking me through it on the phone. But need to learn just some basics. I have only gotten through about half of the book so far, but when it get to the actual ladder logic part, it is starting to sound a little like a foreign language, using terminology that I am not familiar with, but hasn't been explained in the book either. But I will figure that part out. What the real issue is, if the graphics are horrible. They are very small, light, and blurred, and even using a magnifying glass, and most of the time can't make out the numbers used in the addressing of items.

Learn the language and the terms
I liked that he kept it easy to understand,Some times it was difficult to follow when he introduced some abbreviations without explanation. It would have been super helpful to have access to a chart or table listing all the abbreviations ( ie. OTE! XIO...etc )

Easy to read as far as writing style goes
This book is definitely am introduction to the topic of PLCs and should be treated as such. Easy to read as far as writing style goes, very casual. Yet, nice and informative with pictures, examples of PLC applications, etc. A nice little budget buy for anyone who's looking to get into the field or just wants to learn something new.

Pequeño libro, más bien parece una revista
El libro es muy pequeño, la redacción es más bien informal, me parece más como una revista. Pero está aceptable como tutorial.

It is basically an introductory tutorial.
It is basically an introductory tutorial.Reasonably written and clear, but there is not much in it. It is 1/3 of a book. The book served its purpose, to get me started, so I rated it OK.

Basic grounding in PLCs
This is a very basic grounding in PLCs. It covers most of the commonly used information when starting out but doesn’t get into heavy programing. Still needs a basic level of understanding about circuits and logic but fills a gap between zero knowledge of PLCs and the higher level PLC programming books.

Good idea poorly presented
Just starting out with programming Allen Bradley PLC. Bought all three in this series and though the information is scant and badly printed they are not bad for the price. The information is a bit disjointed and the diagrams are poor.I would suggest that for a complete novice then another book may be a better start. i will review the second book very shortly however i will be amazed if there is a sudden jump in quality. If the book was more logically assembled and showed the first steps as promised on the cover then i would have scored it higher.
