Beautiful picture
I spent a long time trying to decide between a 3LCD and a DLP projector. I settled on this projector because of good reviews, price and features. This projector is nice and bright, the picture can still be easily made out in a well lit room, but it’s obviously much more appreciated in a darkened room. 1080P sources look good and while it can support 4K input, it still only outputs in 1080P. However, the real shining point is the HDR support. With a 4K HDR source, it looks just as good as watching a 4K TV, which is very impressive given that many true 4K projectors are still well over $1,000. This alone makes the projector worth the purchase. The menus are easy to use and provide small adjustments so that you don’t have to physically move your projector if say, it’s mounted on the ceiling or what have you. Being a DLP projector, it does have a bit of fan noise, which is only really possible to hear if you don’t have any sound playing. Another con to DLP is that if you shift your eyes really quickly during certain images, you can see the color wheel artifacts on the screen. This is a minor annoyance to me, but if you think it would bother you, I would suggest going with a 3LCD model. Since I have this hooked up through a receiver, I have not tested the built in speaker nor have I tried the 3D feature in the projector, though I intend to once I can find some reliable 3D glasses that are compatible. Overall a good buy and an excellent stopgap for someone who wants 4K quality, but doesn’t want to shell out the cost for a *true* 4K projector just yet.

Bright color and much better than HD20
This projector is amazing for our small movie theater. It is mounted on the ceiling. The old mount for Optoma HD20 works for this projector, but the mount holes need new screws of M4 (only learned the specs in the specs file on the Amazon site after finishing the ceiling mount installation). But I used screws of #8 32-1 1/4 inches. Not a perfect fit but it works with some forced tightening (see the attached last two pictures). I almost returned the projector because my wall screen is 92 in (DA-LITE). The minimum screen size of this projector at my existing mounting location (11 ft away from the screen) is about 95 in. However, the digital zoom of the projector has a wide range. With -1 digital zoom, I got a perfect match of the projected image and my 92in screen. If you want to use an existing ceiling mount for this projector, make sure that your screen size can be approximately achieved with the throw ratio of 1.47-1.62 of this projector. You can also digitally shift the image horizontally and vertically, but such shifts seem to distort the image slightly. I didn't like HDR feature of this projector. I use HDMI 1 for streaming video from Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and YouTube TV. The vivid and cinema modes are my favorites. The colors are very appealing and bright. See the attached first picture. The HDMI 2.0 connection has significant better display colors than the HDMI 1.4 connection. I cannot hear the fan noise when the audio is on. But I can clearly hear the fan noise when the audio is off. The projector can be turned on automatically if it receives HDMI signal and shut down automatically after 5 min of not receiving any signal. I use smart plugs to turn on/off all audio/video devices including ambient lights. The image quality is much better than the old HD20, especially when I stream 8k videos from YouTube. Very happy with the purchase of HD28HDR and use smart life app to control all devices in my movie theater with one click inside the app.

Easily works in daylight!
Husband and I bought this to replace a similar Optoma DLP projector that we had for ~6 years. For the same price point now, this one is way brighter. We used to have to wait until dark to see anything properly on a projector, but this one is still super clear in the middle of the day (barring direct sunlight of course). That aspect alone is worth the upgrade for us, because we can get way more use out of it. The picture is very good; colors are bright and accurate. I also love the focus knob; since it's so big, it offers very fine control and it's easy to get it focused perfectly. The only cons I have are small: (1) It takes a really long time to turn on and switch inputs compared to other projectors I've had. Not a big deal, just a little annoying. (2) No dust filter! I don't know why Optoma doesn't think dust filters are necessary. Apparently they only include them in "dusty climates," whatever that means. Without one, dust will collect in the projector and make it more likely to overheat and have parts break down (that's what happened to our last one multiple times). If you are tech savvy enough, you can open the projector up every so often and vacuum the dust out to make sure the projector lasts a long time. Also just make sure you place it in a well-ventilated spot / not right up against a wall and definitely not in an enclosed space like a cubby shelf. Don't just rely on the projector telling you when it's too hot, something could be damaged or starting to melt a little before the built-in sensors go off. For future reference, if something does go wrong, don't be afraid to fix it yourself. The most common issue I've had with DLP projectors is a bad color wheel. If your colors start flashing weirdly and you hear whirring/clicking from the projector, it's probably the color wheel. You can get a new one online for <$30 and replace it yourself. Just look up a video.

Thinking about it? BUY IT!!
I've had this projector for over 6 months now, so I think my review is pretty objective. I LOVE this projector!! Read below for more. My Setup I set up this projector in my very bright living room. I have 5 7-foot windows perpendicular to my screen, so we get lots of natural sunlight during the days here in Texas. Even with that, the picture is quite clear and not washed out, at least IMO(first two pics). I paired this projector with a CineGrey screen. I highly recommend using the light absorbing screen material if using in a bright room. It really helps with daytime picture quality. I think I spent another $120 for the CineGrey. The next two pictures and video are with my window shutters closed to block out as much light as possible. You can see a marked improvement in picture quality. However, this projector really shines at night or in darkness. It's theater quality and a bright, crisp picture. Pros 1. Bright picture, even during the day. 2. The sound is quite clear, especially if sitting below or near it. I have a sound system, so that feature is muted on mine. But during initial install I did test that out. 3. Lightweight...easy to handle. Cons 1. Ceiling mount options are limited. I purchased a universal mount and had to shimmy it to make it work. 2. Limited keyhole adjustment. I spent too much time trying to get it perfect. My overall advice for anyone thinking about using a projector in living rooms or bright rooms is to get the highest lumen projector over 3000lm you can afford. Obviously 4k projectors are better, but you can't beat this for a 1080p.

The projector has 3 "feet", but only 2 of them are adjustable, the 3rd is fixed? Horrendous design.
I loved my old Optoma projector so when it died, I purchased this one to upgrade in a similar price range and quality. The machine is beautiful and the picture quality is fantastic, however - the design is absolutely non-sensical. On the back of the machine there are two "legs" but only one of them is adjustable, the other is fixed. So if you want to adjust the angle of the image to your wall, good luck, your only option is a lopsided picture because only one leg's height can be adjusted. The other leg is fixed, you can't screw it in or out to adjust height. If someone can explain to me how this is sensible design, I'd love to know. I am in disbelief. I also reached out to Optoma support to inquire about this, and I was not given any solution or reasoning, just a "yea that's weird design, but I don't know why and it's not my job to know, I'll pass it along to the team". Lol. What a joke.

Good but not great.
This was a replacement for an older Optoma projector and it is not as good as the old. The picture is not as good and the remote has to be pointed directly at the projector to work and is sluggish to respond. The old projector's remote could be pointed at the screen and responded much better. Overall it should be good enough (once I get used to the poorer picture quality) but in hindsight I should have paid more and got something better.

Better than BENQ th585
Picture quality is super. My vision is not so great and HDR is more than sufficient to me. The speaker is OK but you do need to have a real speaker. I am not picky in sound but you just gradually get a little bit greedier in your home theatre and want to upgrade when the picture is so great. Not sure how the lamps will work but I got extended warranty from my credit card so I guess I will be just fine. Compared with BENQ th585 (yeah I bought both..), both are 2020 version. The pic diff between the 2 is noticeable. BENQ is very user friendly and I was sold when only using it. But as soon as I switch to compare the pic quality between the 2 I can’t really go back.... so sad I have to return BENQ as it has long warranty and seemingly better customer service (from the review). But for now I have to say OPTOMA 2020 version is better.

I am glad I returned this
This my first projector. It came with image problem which gave me concerns about the reliability. As soon as I opened the test image I noticed a grayish colorful bar at the bottom of the image. I also noticed a very small gray bar at the top right corner (this one is very small). I returned it and spend $100 more to buy a similar specs projector from a different brand ( Let's call it brand X, I won't say which one in case people think this is an Ad ). Pros: 1. very low fan noise, I did not notice this pro until I bought the one from brand A which is much more noticeable compare to this one. I did not even notice this could be a problem. 2. 120 Hz tested, very impressive for the price. 3. picture is good enough for the price Cons: 1. this annoyed me most, the remote is the worst I ever used. The buttons sometimes stuck in after I pressed and I need to get the buttons out almost every time I forgot to press it carefully. Moreover, I am not sure is it just my unit, the remote signal is very weak, I have to point directly at the projector to get any response ( BTW, yes, I did tear off the transparent sticker). 2. extremely hot during operation ( even for projectors ), much hotter than the one from brand A, I believe that is trick to make it quieter. Over all, I am glad that I did spend another $100 to buy a different one. The picture quality from brand A is a little bit better but definitely noticeable and it came with a real remote controller and a wider rage of positioning. The only downside I have now is that I need to use my noise canceling headphone if I want to get the full power when using it during very quite night time.
